Illinois basketball news: Texas Tech added to the Illini’s non-conference schedule
The Illini have shown that they want to be battle tested before Big Ten Conference play.

CBS college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein announced today on X that Illinois basketball will host Texas Tech on Tuesday, November 11th. The agreement includes a return game in Lubbock during the 2026–27 season (date TBD). It is yet another challenging test for the Illini during their non-conference schedule. As past years have shown, Illinois basketball will consistently play plenty of high-major contests during its non-conference slate.
This showdown is expected to be one of the premier early-season matchups, with both programs projected to be in the preseason Top 25. According to Rothstein’s preseason Top 45, Texas Tech comes in at #10, while Illinois is ranked #22.

What does it mean?
The Red Raiders are coming off an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and return second-team All-American JT Toppin. Toppin, who reportedly secured $4 million to return to Lubbock, averaged 18.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game last season.
This game gives Illinois another marquee home matchup at the State Farm Center for the second consecutive year. After hosting #1 Tennessee last season, the Illini now welcome a likely top 15 Texas Tech team to Champaign.
Illinois continues to build a challenging non-conference slate. In addition to Texas Tech, the Illini have confirmed games against Alabama (Nov. 19), UConn (Nov. 28), Tennessee (Dec. 6), and Missouri (date TBD). Those matchups total to five matchups against Power Five opponents. Could a sixth be on the way?
Last season, Illinois basketball played five power conference teams in non-conference play, finishing with a 2–3 record. With greater experience and continuity this year, the Illini are poised for improved results.
