Illinois Basketball Star Terrence Shannon Jr Court Updates per Mitch Gilfillan
Terrence Shannon Jr and the ongoing case that raised in December 2023 went to court on June 10th. Peoria Attorney, Mitch Gilfillan, has been the main source for information and updates on Twitter and has provided an understandable translation of the legal jargon surrounding this case. The three days that this case has been in court have been eventful. To start, Shannon Jr testified and his attorneys provided an opening statement below
Defense (TSJ) Opening Statement: MN gave multiple statements to police. MN statements mostly consistent but not consistent with overall investigation. Alleged victim never used the word ‘scared’ or ‘terrified’ until preliminary hearing 8 months after incident occurred.
Defense: The alleged victim went to LM Hospital and a SANE exam was performed all over body and submitted to KBI for testing approximately 15 hours after incident. The DNA does not show any male DNA inside her body + external genitalia does not show any male DNA pointing to TSJ.…
Later on, others including the Police officer who was initially contacted at the incident provided what role they had in the situation. One of the main takeaways was outlined very precisely by WCIA’s Amanda Brennan per a note from lawyers. Per Brennan’s tweet, “While the alleged victim’s friend was on the stand, she said she went with to the hospital for the sexual assault exam the next morning. That night, and 24 hours after the alleged Shannon incident, they went back the Jayhawk Cafe”. Terrence Shannon Jr’s attorneys also brought forth notable names to testify for the Illinois Basketball star. These names include current Kansas Basketball players, Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar who also know Shannon Jr personally. An Illinois grad assistant also testified his side of the story in support of Shannon Jr’s story.
DyShawn Hobson (Grad Asst. at IL) testified. His role was to keep eye on TSJ (See: you have one job!). Always kept eyes on him + never lost sight. Lawrence PD never contacted him. Never saw TSJ grab another girl that night. TSJ is lowkey + would not put himself in this position.
Kevin McCullar Jr. testified via Zoom from California. Former Texas Tech teammate.
Summary: TSJ not a big drinker. Never saw him interact with any girls that night but did not watch him whole time. Found out on “X” about December arrest. Never heard from police until February…
The legal processes are always a thorough and lengthy process, however, it does seem that a lot more clarity will be had at the end of this week. Basketball always takes a backseat, however, the results of the trial have a direct implication on Terrence Shannon Jr’s NBA Draft stock and the millions of dollars he could possibly earn from the NBA.
