Illinois Football: 3 Keys to Upsetting Nebraska
Here’s what Illinois Football MUST do if they want to take down Nebraska, move to 6-3, and clinch a bowl game with 3 games to follow.

Illinois Football can clinch bowl eligibility for the 3rd consecutive season Friday night with a win over Nebraska, with three regular-season games still remaining.
However, standing in the way is a Nebraska defense that has been one of the toughest in the Big Ten. The Huskers are allowing just 15.6 points per game, while holding opponents to only 91.1 rushing yards per contest. Of course, that’s a significant challenge for an Illinois offense that will need to continue their success on the ground to boost Katin Houser as he reacclimates to being under center.
Still, Nebraska has shown some significant vulnerabilities lately.
The Huskers have dropped 3 straight games against Indiana, Oregon, and Washington, scoring just 41 total points during that losing streak. Meanwhile, Illinois has found ways to win 3 in a row despite injuries, personnel changes, and plenty of adversity over the last month.
Ultimately, in a matchup expected to be a battle, the difference will likely come down to which team does a better job of taking advantage of opportunities. That said, here are three keys to Illinois pulling off the upset (-4.5 NEB) over Nebraska.
1. Pressure Anthony Colandrea and Take Advantage of Nebraska’s Offensive Line Struggles
If there’s one area Illinois must exploit, it’s Nebraska’s recent struggles protecting quarterback Anthony Colandrea. The Huskers transfer senior has been under considerable pressure during their 3-game slide, taking 11 sacks and consequently throwing 5 interceptions during that stretch.
Notably, Colandrea has been sacked 16 times this season and thrown 7 interceptions, including 2 last week against Washington. When opposing defenses have kept him uncomfortable and disrupted his timing, Nebraska’s offense has struggled to find answers, especially in the red zone.
Illinois front-6 needs to find a way to generate consistent pressure and collapse the pocket to prevent Colandrea from comfortably working through his progressions. Nebraska averages 186.6 rushing yards per game, so limiting Jamal Rule and the ground game on early downs will be particularly important. To that point, if Illinois can limit chunk plays on early downs and force Colandrea into obvious passing situations, the opportunities for sacks, hurried throws, and turnovers should be high.
Seemingly, this Huskers OL has continued to regress in recent weeks. Following a 3-interception outing last week vs. Washington, can the Illini capitalize while Coldera and his protection are shaken?

2. Establish the Run Early and Help Boost Katin Houser As He Reacclimates
Nebraska’s defense is arguably the biggest challenge Illinois faces in this matchup. The Blackshirts rank among the nation’s best against the run, allowing just 91.1 rushing yards per game. However, that shouldn’t stop OC Barry Lunney Jr. from leaning on Aidan Laughery and the ground game.
Currently, Illinois averages 164.2 rushing yards per game, with Laughery leading the way at 560 yards on 89 attempts and 6.3 yards per carry. True freshman Javari Barnett provides another explosive option, averaging 7.3 yards per carry with 183 rushing yards this season. He also showed his big-play ability against Maryland with a go-ahead 64-yard touchdown to give the Illini a 4th-quarter lead.
The key is staying committed even when Nebraska makes things difficult early. Consistency on first and second down can keep quarterback Katin Houser out of obvious passing situations, create manageable third downs, and force Nebraska’s defense to stay on their toes. Plus, with Houser back under center after being out two weeks with a broken hand, establishing the run would certainly help him reacclimate by taking pressure off his arm and allowing the offense to settle in.
Illinois offense doesn’t necessarily need eye-popping rushing numbers. They just need to establish enough consistency to control the tempo, sustain drives, and wear a Nebraska defense down that is susceptible to late-game slips.

3. Win the Small Things and Don’t Give Nebraska Extra Opportunities
This could be one of those November Big Ten games where the smallest mistakes make the biggest difference. That said, as simple as it is, Illinois cannot afford to give Nebraska easy opportunities through penalties, turnovers, or missed assignments.
The penalty numbers are particularly interesting. Nebraska has committed 64 penalties for 555 yards through eight games, averaging 69.4 penalty yards per contest. Illinois, meanwhile, has committed just 33 penalties for 279 yards, averaging 34.9 per game. That’s a significant difference that could become key in a close matchup, with the Huskers on the road in a tough night-game environment in Champaign.
To that point, ball security will be just as important. Nebraska has struggled with turnovers during their losing streak, and Illinois needs to avoid giving the Huskers extra opportunities to find a spark and swing momentum in their direction. With 5 interceptions thrown by Anthony Colandrea over in their 3 losses to Indiana, Oregon, and Washington, it’s crucial that Illinois capitalize while the UNLV transfer senior is shaken.
Illinois doesn’t need to do anything extraordinary in this area. Simply, they just need to avoid major costly mistakes and make Nebraska earn everything. If the Illini do, Nebraska hasn’t proven in recent weeks to be able to overcome adversity during this 3-game skid.
