How McElwain is Preparing the Chippewas

It’s homecoming week, and the 2-0 Fighting Illini are preparing for coach Jim McElwain and Central Michigan. McElwain commented on Illinois Football in an interview with Field Level Media, getting more into detail about his squads mindset entering a tough matchup.

CMU holds a 1-1 record thus far, after getting blown out 52-16 by Florida International last week. Thus far, the Chips’ have had a rough start to the season, and are living up to the low expectations set by national and local media. However, the veteran coach is looking for a spark to ignite his squad.

In order for Central Michigan to turn their season around, there must be a drastic change. For McElwain, the change starts with embracing a tough battle on the road, against a more talented opponent.

McElwain on Facing Illinois Football

Coach McElwain, emphasized the need for Central Michigan to feel some discomfort on the road, facing a better opponent. Undoubtedly, playing away is never easy, no matter who the challenger is. However, after facing low expectations, and a slow start, the veteran coach is doing his part to get his program used to embracing the challenge.

“More than anything, we’ve got to go out and prove we can play on the road,” McElwain told Field Level Media. “It’s OK to be uncomfortable. It really becomes about us.” Of course, in reference to the Chippewas taking control of their own situation.

Can the CMU squad bounce back, and create a spark in week 3 to spoil Illinois homecoming? Certainly, its not going to be easy.
