Illinois Football: Keys to Victory vs Central Michigan
Looking at the biggest threat and best opportunity for Illinois Football when facing the Central Michigan Chippewas
Notes On The Chippewas
Central Michigan faced a frustrating rollercoaster of a season in 2023 under 5th-year head coach Jim McElwain.
Last year, the Chippewas ranked 5th in the Mid-America Conference in total offensive yards, after tabbing 4,136 yards and 36 touchdowns
Certainly, the offensive firepower and talent were there to make them a dangerous team. However, a frustratingly bad defense ultimately led to a 4-8 record and no postseason for the Chippewas. in addition to a last-place finish in the MAC West.
Looking ahead to 2024, most of Central Michigan’s talented offensive core is returning. However, they need their quarterback to mesh into their offensive system quickly, and take control.
The Opportunity For Illinois Football
During the offseason, the Chippewas picked up Iowa transfer quarterback Joe Labas from the portal. Labas, a former 4-star prospect, has shown flashes of his abilities to be a game manager and a leader on the field. However, last week’s matchup with Florida International was a tough game for the Ohio native.
Joe went 20 for 39 (51% CP) through the air against the Panthers, throwing 5 INT’s. Leading me to Illinois biggest opportunity against Central Michigan – continued turnover momentum. The Chips’ QB is going to be shaken up, and the Illinois defense can take advantage.
The Illini have forced 8 turnovers thus far, through 2 only games. Illinois Football is in a 3-way tie for 1st in the nation in turnover margin. Seemingly, the secondary made an impressive progression over the offseason. There’s certainly a great chance for the Fighting Illini defense to capitalize against a struggling quarterback.
Central Michigan’s Threats to Illinois Football
If coach McElwain wants to turn this season around, and take advantage of their offensive firepower, they need their quarterback comfortable and clicking. McElwain will likely put Joe in positions to build confidence and avoid a high turnover risk.
Furthermore, there’s a good chance we’ll see a solid dose of the Chippewas run game. Put more responsibility on talented RB Marion Lukes.
RB – Marion Lukes
A versatile athlete, Lukes drew significant national attention during the preseason. He was named to multiple preseason award watchlists, including the senior bowl, after earning first-team All-MAC honors in 2023, as a kick returner. Marion is shifty, and provides home run ability for the Chips offense, alongside power back Myles Bailey.
Illinois defense cannot allow Lukes to tear off big plays, and spark momentum for CMU. If they do, Joe Labas and the offense could get comfortable, and in rhythm, putting stress on Illinois.
Surely, it’s big test for the Fighting Illini front 7, who didn’t have a great performance against Kansas overall. Can the defensive line bounce back, and cause more havoc against the Chippewas?
