Illinois Football Hosting Unique Transfer Portal Visitor
Per Pete Thamel: Missouri State Basketball transfer Michael Osei-Bonsu visits Illinois Football.
News: Illinois Football appears to have a unique transfer portal visitor on campus. According to ESPN senior college football analyst Pete Thamel, Missouri State basketball forward Michael Osei-Bonsu is currently in Champaign on a visit with Bret Bielema and the Illini football team.
Notably, the Bolingbrook (IL), native has not played football before and is now exploring a transition to the gridiron with at least one season of eligibility, after finishing his college basketball career. Standing 6-foot-4 and 289 pounds with a 35-inch vertical and basketball athleticism, Osei-Bonsu brings an intriguing set of physical traits that could translate well on the football field at several positions.
As Thamel reported, he is expected to be evaluated at either tight end or defensive line; however, Illinois projects him to play at tight end. The potential to add him to Jared Elliott’s unit is intriguing, especially given Illinois’ need for depth at the position.
While there is uncertainty surrounding his ability to contribute at the Power Four level, Osei-Bonsu is an athletic developmental project who could potentially be molded into a contributing depth piece for the 2026 roster. The transition will certainly present challenges, but the physical tools are there.
Could football ultimately become Osei-Bonsu’s path to the pros, following in the footsteps of former basketball players like Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham, and Mo Alie-Cox? Bielema’s staff has shown a strong track record of identifying and developing underrated talent previously. It’s certainly a storyline worth monitoring.
NOTE: Osei-Bonsu averaged 15.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game at Missouri State in 2025-26, totaling 826 points over two seasons on the hardwood with the Bears.
