Illinois Football continued a massive day on the recruiting trail on Tuesday (6/16), landing 2027 Florida running back Steven Alexis.

The St. Petersburg native announced his verbal commitment to Illinois just hours after the Illini landed four-star wide receiver Bennett Konkey. Notably, Konkey was the program’s top target in the 2027 class and one of the premier prospects in the state of Illinois.

That said, Tuesday was certainly a momentous day for Bret Bielema’s crew.

Despite previously being committed to Deion Sanders and Colorado, Alexis ultimately chose Illinois following an official visit to Champaign last weekend (6/12). The 6-foot, 200-pound Gibbs High School standout drew interest from a number of Power Four programs throughout his recruitment, including Colorado, Pitt, Iowa, Virginia, and Cincinnati, among others.

According to 247Sports, Alexis is currently ranked as the No. 118 overall prospect in the talent-rich state of Florida and the No. 87 running back nationally in the 2027 cycle. More importantly, his commitment gives Illinois its 10th pledge in the 2027 class, a group that appears to be gaining momentum by the day after what was initially a slower, more selective start to the recruiting cycle. As a result, the Illini now sit at No. 57 nationally in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings.

So, what exactly is the Illinois RB room getting out of Alexis?

What Steven Alexis Means for Illinois Football in 2027 and Beyond

As a junior, Alexis rushed for 1,113 yards and 9 touchdowns, while impressively averaging nearly 9 yards per carry for the Gladiators. His production, paired with a growing offer list, made him a priority target for Illinois running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley and the Illini staff. That said, following a quick offer back in late April and a visit to campus last weekend, Bret Bielema’s staff was able to close.

On the field, Alexis brings a physical, downhill running style that fits what Illinois has traditionally valued at the position. At 200 pounds, he runs with power through contact. However, he also possesses the burst and vision necessary to create explosive plays. His junior film shows a player who can consistently pick up tough yards, while still having the athleticism and quickness to pick up chunk yardage.

With a larger frame, he has the physical tools to continue developing once he arrives in Champaign, and the traits on film suggest he’s got potential to develop into a productive Big Ten running back, with time. This addition feels like another strong evaluation win for Bret Bielema and the Illinois Football staff.
