Illinois Football names 2023 QB1
Luke Altmyer has his opportunity. To no one’s surprise, Illinois Football named Luke Altmyer as their starting QB. Altmyer arrived this past spring from Ole Miss. He was a four star prospect, however he has played the backup role throughout his time there. Altmyer looks to continue the success Tommy Devito had at Illinois. Altmyer is a talented prospect, he may not have the consistency and control that Devito had. However, Altmyer has impressive tools. He is a better athlete and runner than Devito and looks to have a bigger arm.
The biggest question for Altmyer will be his experience. Devito had previous starting experience while at Syracuse, Altmyer has none. Due to this, I expect growing pains to start the season. Altmyer needs to learn to keep it simple and not put the ball in harms. Devito did this perfectly. As a result, Tommy Devito may have been the best QB Illinois has had in almost a decade.

Starting off with a test.
Illinois Football hits the ground running. Toledo is one of the top programs in the MAC. The Illini will need to be on their best to start off strong. They then travel to Kansas for a hyped matchup against Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks. There is a lot of pressure on the Illini to start off 2-0 so that their game against Penn State is an elite atmosphere. Altmyer’s play will definitely be the tipping point. If Luke Altmyer can avoid turnovers and costly mistakes, I think that the Illini will have a good shot at going 2-0. Their defensive line is one to reckon with, and Isaiah Williams is a superstar in the making.
Luke Altmyer’s supporting cast
Running backs Josh McCray and Reggie Love also need to produce at a high level to alleviate the burden off of Altmyer. Both have shown flashes of brilliance in their young careers, however both will be asked to fill a large role. Isaiah Williams, Pat Bryant and Casey Washington are a stable group of veteran receivers. Though the secondary has questions given the talent they lost, the front line and linebacker core may be the best in the conference.
No one is surprised by Luke Altmyer winning the starting QB job. Now its all eyes towards Toledo on September 2nd.
