Illinois Football News: Bret Bielema Nominated For Coach of the Year

The American Heart Association announced Bret Bielema has been nominated for the  Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

It’s certainly quite an honor for the Illini leader to be recognized on a national scale, following a 5-1 start to the 2024 season. Illinois has exceeded expectations thus far, and seemingly the Fighting Illini are in for another special season under coach Bielema.

In just his 4th year in Champaign, Bret Bielema has Illini Football on the hunt for their second 8+ win campaign.

What is the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award?

The Bear Bryant Coach of The Year Award not only highlights coaching success on the field, but additionally celebrates the passion of head coaches to leave a positive lasting effect on their student-athletes. Bielema’s consideration for the honor says quite a bit about what people in the Smith Center think of their leader. Additionally, the nomination speaks volumes of the progress Bielema is making in creating a sustainable winning environment for Illinois Football.

According to the Bryant Awards, “Coach Bryant was a leader, both on and off the field. He possessed the ability to inspire, the patience to teach, and the gift of leadership. The Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award salutes those coaches who have reached that same high standard of excellence.

Since its establishment in 1986, only 5 Big Ten coaches have received Coach of the Year honors. Could Bielema therefore be the next to join some legendary company?
