Illinois Football news: Florida DB Almirian Thomas commits to the Illini
Illinois Football has added their 6th Commit From the Sunshine State to Their Current Class of 2026
News: Illinois Football is navigating a pivotal stretch in the 2026 recruiting cycle. Bret Bielema’s staff has once again capitalized on the April wave of official visitors, this time landing yet another verbal commitment from the Sunshine State.
Almirian Thomas, a three-star defensive back from Cape Coral (FL), announced his commitment to the Fighting Illini following his official visit to Champaign, according to a post on his social media pages.

How Thomas Impacts Illinois Football
Almirian makes for the 13th commitment of the 2026 class for Illinois Football. Though we are a little over halfway to national signing day, the Fighting Illini have impressively been able to consistently maintain a top-10 ranking in 247 Sports’ 2026 Team Recruiting Rankings. After briefly slipping into the top 15, Illinois jumped back up to No. 7 following a pair of commitments on Monday (4/14), including Thomas.
According to 247 Sports, Thomas ranks as the No. 39 cornerback in the country and the No. 56 overall prospect in talent-ridden Florida.
Interestingly enough, Illinois Football was the first Division 1 program to take a chance on Almirian and extend an official offer. Despite picking up a handful of good offers since—including Minnesota, Michigan State, Indiana, West Virginia, and more—the talented 3-star remained loyal. Following his recent visit to campus, he decided Illinois was the place to be.
Thoughts
Standing at 6’1″ but a lean 165 pounds, Thomas will need time in the weight room with strength and conditioning coach Tank Wright. That said, his film flashes undeniable athleticism and natural length—tools the staff can certainly develop over time. Defensive Coordinator Aaron Henry has a strong track record of developing defensive backs, so there’s clear potential for this to be a great fit for both parties.
Thomas joins 4-star Toledo (OH) native Victor Singleton as the second DB in Illinois’ 2026 class. As it stands, Coach Corey Parker has an experienced unit heading into 2026. However, with some proper time for development, Almirian could be on track as a contender for an increased role in a couple of seasons as the Illinois roster continues to develop.
