Illinois Football News: Illini sign former Badger DT James Thompson Jr

NEWS: Illinois football has landed the commitment of former four-star prospect and Wisconsin Badger defensive tackle, James Thompson Jr. The news was initially reported by Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247sports. Thompson Jr., a 6 foot 5 inch. 295-pound defensive tackle, has stared for the Wisconsin Badgers for two years. He will have just one more year of college eligibility left and will reportedly use that year with Illinois football. The Cincinnati native will be the third former Wisconsin Badger player joining the Fighting Illini this season.

Defensive Tackle Curt Neal and outside Edge rusher, Leon Lowery Jr, all announced their intent to play with the Illini after spending time in Madison with the Badgers. Though the Badgers defensive line was not very good per various metrics, Bret Bielema and Terrance Jamison seem to be confident that their scheme can help these players reach success.

A renovated Illinois Football Defensive line

In addition to the three former Badgers, the Illini have also added Florida State transfer, Tomiwa Durojaiye. All the new additions have a number of games under their belt, hence it is nice to see the Illini add experience to their room given the young talent currently in the room. With Dennis Briggs Jr. and Te’Rah Edwards on their way out, Bret Bielema has already built a stable foundation of defensive lineman to play the 2025 season.
