Illinois Football news: Three-Star Running back Nelsyn Wheeler commits
The Illini continue to stack impressive recruits in their class of 2026
NEWS: Illinois football has landed the commitment of three-star running back, Nelsyn Wheeler. Wheeler announced his commitment to Illinois after a weekend official visit to Champaign. He is a touted prospect with offers from Michigan State, Kansas, Northwestern and more. Running backs coach Thad Ward was the lead recruiter for Wheeler and formed a strong relationship that helped spur on a commitment.
The Class of 2026 continues to impress as it continues to stay in the top 15 to top 20 of the class of 2026 recruiting rankings. Wheeler is the second running back in the Illini’s class alongside three-star back, Javari Barnett.
The fit for Illinois Football
Ever since Bret Bielema has arrived to Champaign, the running back room has remained a strength. In addition to supreme talent, Illinois football seems to consistently have multiple running backs capable of starting full time. This year, Kaden Feagin, Aidan Laughery, and Ca’lil Valentine will certainly lead the show. However, the Illini also have talented young backs in Cedric Wyche and John Forster.
Additionally, Illini Inquirer’s Jeremy Werner reported that current commit Javari Barnett is scheduled to take an official visit to Alabama. It seems that Illinois football is preparing for anything to happen particularly when an SEC program comes into a prospect’s recruitment.
With Wheeler committed, the Illini have a power-five back with a diverse skillset that will provide depth.
