Williams brings a lot of athletic similarities to the former Illini great, Terrence Shannon Jr.

When Lincoln Williams was asked about his favorite former Illinois player, the Kankakee standout didn’t need time to think… Terrence Shannon Jr.

For Illinois fans, that answer immediately stands out. While Williams isn’t arriving in Champaign with expectations of becoming the next Shannon overnight, it’s easy to see why the former Illini star has become a role model.

The similarities begin on the court. Like Shannon, Lincoln Williams is a dynamic athlete who thrives in transition, attacks the rim with force, and possesses the kind of explosiveness that can change a game in a matter of seconds. His highlight-reel dunks and ability to finish above the rim have made him one of the most exciting in-state prospects in recent years.

But the connection between the two extends beyond playing style.

The Parallels

When Illinois first started recruiting Williams, Shannon took time to encourage him throughout the process. His message was simple: trust the process and keep putting in the work every day. It’s advice that clearly resonated with Williams.

After all, Shannon’s own journey serves as proof that development doesn’t happen overnight. Through years of work, Shannon transformed himself into one of the best players in college basketball, earning All-American honors, leading Illinois to a Big Ten championship, and eventually becoming a first-round NBA Draft pick.

Williams now hopes to follow a similar path. The 6-foot-5 guard arrives at Illinois after averaging 26 points per game as a senior and finishing his career as Kankakee High School’s all-time leading scorer with 1,853 points. Yet Illinois sees much more than an accomplished scorer.

Brad Underwood has repeatedly pointed to Williams’ defensive upside as one of the traits that excites the coaching staff most. Underwood believes Williams is capable of guarding virtually any perimeter position, thanks to his length, athleticism, and competitiveness. Those same defensive tools helped make Shannon one of the most impactful two-way players in the country during his time in Champaign.

Of course, comparisons can only go so far. Williams will have to carve out his own legacy.

But when an Illinois signee possesses Shannon-like athleticism, receives encouragement directly from Shannon and embraces the same work ethic that fueled Shannon’s rise, it’s easy to understand why the Illini staff is excited about his future.

The blueprint has already been laid. Now it’s up to Williams to continue trusting the process and putting in the work.
