When Illinois basketball fans look back on the Final Four team years from now, they’ll remember the stars.

They’ll remember Keaton Wagler becoming an All-American. They’ll remember Tomislav Ivisic stretching defenses and Andrej Stojakovic making big shots.

But they shouldn’t forget Kylan Boswell.

Years from now, when Illinois basketball fans talk about Kylan Boswell, the conversation probably won’t start with his numbers, his awards, or even his NBA Draft prospects.

It will start with where he was from… Champaign.

The Hometown hero

In an era when college basketball feels increasingly transactional, Boswell’s story felt vastly different. The hometown kid who left Illinois to pursue bigger opportunities eventually found his way back home. When he returned, he helped lead the Illini to one of the greatest seasons in program history.

That alone would cement his legacy. But Boswell’s impact went far beyond being a local success story.

Illinois needed his stability after a roster overhaul. Boswell provided it from Day 1. He started every game he played, averaged 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists, earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors from the media, was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team, and added Academic All-Big Ten recognition. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring and second in both assists and steals despite missing seven games with a broken hand.

His season was filled with winning plays and big moments. He dropped a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds against Florida Gulf Coast, scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds against No. 5 UConn, put up 22 against No. 11 Alabama, and reached the 1,000-point mark for his career against Texas Tech. When Illinois basketball needed him most in March, he delivered double-digit performances in NCAA Tournament wins over Penn and VCU during the program’s run to the Final Four.

Still, Boswell’s biggest impact may have come away from the spotlight.

The players’ only meeting

Following Illinois basketball’s Big Ten Tournament loss to Wisconsin, he organized a players-only gathering at his home. There was pizza, wings, and honest conversation. It was a small moment that reflected the leadership he brought all season. On a roster loaded with talent, Boswell became the connective tissue.

Now comes the next chapter.

Boswell enters the NBA Draft process as Illinois’ least-discussed prospect. With Keaton Wagler projected near the top of the draft and Andrej Stojakovic who was drawing a ton of headlines, Boswell has quietly positioned himself as a potential late second-round selection or two-way contract candidate. His path likely mirrors players such as Davion Mitchell or Lu Dort—tough, defensive-minded players who carved out roles through toughness and versatility.

When Illinois fans look back, they’ll remember the defense, the leadership, and the winning.

Most of all, they’ll remember a hometown kid who came back and helped take Illinois to a Final Four. Not every hometown story gets a perfect ending.

This one came pretty close.
