Illinois Football Adds Veteran TE Peyton Smith
NEWS: Bret Bielema strengthens Jared Elliott’s TE depth late in fall camp… Could the San Diego State grad-transfer quickly make a name in Champaign?

Illinois Football has locked in a late veteran piece to its roster two weeks prior to the 2026 season, as head coach Bret Bielema confirmed during his Wednesday media availability that 6th-year graduate transfer tight end Peyton Smith has joined Jared Elliott’s unit after transferring from the University of San Diego.
Smith, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound 6th-year senior, gives the Illini another experienced option in a TE room that recently lost No. 1-ranked JUCO tight end transfer BJ Thurman to a season-ending Jones fracture in his foot. Smith’s size and experience give Illinois another valuable veteran body at a position where Jared Elliott will be looking to establish a reliable rotation heading into the season.
Smith spent 5 seasons with the Toreros, where he developed into a productive tight end in the Pioneer League. A three-time All-Pioneer Football League selection, Smith finished the 2025 season with 21 receptions for 155 yards. Over the course of his 5-year career in the Golden State, Peyton racked up 371 yards and 3 touchdowns on 48 catches.
Now, he gets his first opportunity to play in the Big Ten. He will have less than two weeks to get acclimated to Barry Lunney Jr’s offense and compete for reps in Elliott’s first season leading the tight end room. That said, his experience certainly makes him an interesting addition as the Illini continue to beef up the position.
What could he bring to the room in 2026?

What it means for the Illini
This may not be Illinois’ flashiest addition of the offseason, but it could prove to be a pretty important one.
The season-ending injury to BJ Thurman changed the outlook of Illinois’ tight end room. Thurman arrived with some buzz in Champaign as the No. 1 junior college tight end in the 2025 transfer cycle and was expected to be a major part of the rotation. With him now out, Illinois needed to add another experienced option to a room that already features several younger players. That said, coach Bielema claims that experience and maturity were a big part of the decision to bring Smith to Champaign.
Christian Abney and Kaden Feagin are still likely to lead the room, with Davin Stoffel, Tanner Hollinger and Maurice Smith Jr. also competing for opportunities. Behind them, Illinois has younger options like Will Vala and Logan Farrell who could become important pieces down the road, but may still benefit from another year of development before being asked to carry a major role in the Big Ten. That’s where Smith becomes interesting. He doesn’t have to come in and immediately become a starter to make this addition worthwhile. If he can compete with Stoffel and the other veterans for meaningful snaps, he gives Elliott another experienced body to work into the rotation and takes some pressure off the younger players.
The question now is whether Smith can do enough in the final stretch of camp to push his way into that top three quickly. It’s highly doubtful, and more likely that we will see him make more of an impact as the season progresses.
Could he be a threat in time for Big Ten play? At minimum, can his experience help make Illinois younger, developmental depth better?
Bret Bielema on New Illinois Football TE Transfer Peyton Smith
“Peyton Smith is a tight end from the University of San Diego that joined us last week. He’ll have his first practice tomorrow.”
A tight end that we, just after BJ got hurt, we kind of thought if we could add someone else in that room with some experience and maturity, and he played a lot of football there at San Diego. So, initial thoughts on him have been very, very positive; excited to get him in the building.”
