Illinois basketball is emerging as one of the most intriguing teams in the country. Their off-season moves in the transfer portal, garnering promising NBA Draft prospects, and bringing in talented additions have fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming season. With a returning roster ready to take another big step forward, Illinois is poised to compete for a Big Ten title and ensure they are well-equipped for the challenges ahead. Playing time won’t be guaranteed with the level of talent on this roster, creating a competitive environment that will sharpen every player’s skills. As Illinois fans eagerly await the season, a teaser highlight video featuring most of the squad has provided a much-needed glimpse into the team’s potential.

While the video is only 1 minute and 47 seconds long, it offers plenty of material for over analysis. It is important to note the only two faces missing was Croatian center Tomislav Ivisic, and of course the pending reclassification of 2025 five star Will Riley.

Standouts from the Illinois basketball highlights

Four players, in particular, stood out based on their on ball usage, playmaking, alpha hierarchy, and emerging leadership roles. Summer is the perfect time for players to establish their presence on the team. The less structured and less stressful environment allows players to experiment and grow without the pressure of a live audience or online scrutiny. This freedom can lead to significant development, making summer play an essential part of the team’s journey.

Ty Rodgers: Evolving His Game

Ty Rodgers, who started all 38 games last season, was the team’s energy and glue. Rodgers is mostly known for his high-level defense and rebounding. This summer, it’s clear he has focused on improving his outside game. While the low-pressure environment of summer play allows for experimentation, Rodgers’ efforts to get comfortable with his outside shot are promising. He appears to have tweaked his shooting form for more fluidity. If he continues on this trajectory, Rodgers will become a more versatile threat. Defenses will be forced to stay extended on the perimeter and creating more space for his teammates.

Kasparas Jakucionis: A Freshman Phenom

Kasparas Jakucionis showcased in several clips why he is considered a 2025 NBA Draft prospect. Standing at 6’5″+ and weighing 200 pounds, Jakucionis frequently had the ball in his hands. He made quick decisions, found teammates, attacked, and showcased his shooting off the dribble. His ability to command the ball and earn the respect of his teammates, many of whom are college veterans, is impressive for a freshman. A standout moment in the video was when Jakucionis explained a situation to Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn, signaling his emerging leadership role.

Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn: Rising Competitor

Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn didn’t see much playing time last season, but he began to find spot opportunities towards the end of the year. In the highlight video, Gibbs-Lawhorn shared ball-handling duties with Jakucionis, demonstrating his aggressiveness and scoring potential by cutting off the ball and channeling a scoring mindset. When on a different team, his willingness to challenge Jakucionis showed his competitive spirit, which will only benefit both players. Gibbs-Lawhorn’s experience battling bigger and stronger guards in these practice scenarios will prepare him for the upcoming season.

Kylan Boswell: Veteran Leadership

Kylan Boswell brings a veteran presence at point guard that Illinois has lacked in recent years. Throughout the video, Boswell consistently pushed the pace and challenged defenders, balancing his playmaking with his own scoring. His ability to drive the tempo and create opportunities for his teammates will be crucial for Illinois’ success.

The highlight video only scratches the surface. It provides valuable insights into who is making an early stamp on their presence on the Illinois basketball team. Jakucionis, Rodgers, Gibbs-Lawhorn, and Boswell all made significant impressions, showcasing early potential to impact the team’s success and ceiling. It might seem like over analysis for a video under two minutes, but as basketball enthusiasts, we can’t resist diving deep. The potential of this Illinois team is noticeable, and fans have every reason to be excited for the season ahead.
