Is Illinois Basketball A National Championship Contender in 2026?
Can Illinois Basketball win it all in 2026? NBC Sports’ John Fanta is a strong believer.
Illinois Basketball officially entered the center of the national championship conversation on Wednesday (5/27) when Andrej Stojakovic announced his withdrawal from the 2026 NBA Draft and return to Champaign, giving Brad Underwood the final massive piece of continuity from a roster that went on a memorable Final Four run last season (2025-26). A run that not only raised the floor of Underwood’s program but further energized an already very passionate Illini fanbase.
That said, in an era where deep tournament runs can lead to eventual major roster overhauls, Underwood has managed to pull off a masterclass in retaining valuable, experienced production from a team that already proved it can compete on college basketball’s biggest stage.
Which is a major reason why national analysts are rapidly jumping on the Illini train entering 2026-27.
Notably, on Wednesday evening, NBC Sports’ John Fanta labeled Illinois Basketball an “A-tier” national championship contender following the Stojakovic news.
Fanta stated on X: “Illinois is a tier A national championship contender entering the 2026-27 season. Andrej Stojakovic, David Mirkovic, the Ivisic Bros (Tomislav, Zvonimir), Jake Davis, an ELITE shotmaker in Stefan Vaaks, Quentin Coleman.
Brad Underwood has a powerhouse of a team. Preseason Top 5.”

With Andrej Stojakovic officially back in Champaign, Illinois now has the returning production, offensive firepower, and roster cohesion from a final-four-experienced team to realistically position itself among college basketball’s true title contenders entering 2026-27. For a fanbase still chasing the program’s first national championship, the road back to the Final Four suddenly feels a whole lot more realistic.
Can Illinois Basketball win it all in 2026-27? Several national experts believe Brad Underwood may very well have the keys to get the job done.
