Will Keaton Wagler be a top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft?

Wagler would be the first Illini basketball player to be drafted in the top-five since 2005.

Keaton Wagler has been one of the most incredible stories of the past calendar year. Just one year ago, Wagler had just moved into the Illinois campus to start his college basketball journey. The Shawnee, Kansas native was a borderline top-150 prospect who many had expected to redshirt his freshman year. Fast forward one year, and Wagler has made national appearances on ESPN and The Stephen A. Smith Show and is a consensus lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Keaton Wagler, however, is one of the most polarizing figures in the NBA lottery, as many still doubt his frame and below-the-rim athleticism. Some are in love with his ability to play on and off the ball, to shoot the ball and overall basketball feel.

Adam Finkelstein of CBS Sports joined Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander on the Eye on Basketball Podcast and had some interesting insight on Wagler’s draft stock heading into draft night.

A fluid situation

A source close to Armchair Illini confirmed that Keaton Wagler does not know which team will choose him in just four days. Though Wagler does expect to be picked between picks five and nine, there is no guarantee yet. That means the former Illini could hear his name go to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Brooklyn Nets, the Sacramento Kings, the Atlanta Hawks, or the Dallas Mavericks.

There is, however, still quite a bit of buzz for Wagler to go fifth overall to the Los Angeles Clippers. Though many have Mikel Brown Jr. and Darius Acuff higher than Keaton on big boards, Wagler simply fits better on the Clippers roster alongside Darius Garland. Despite the fit, the Clippers are heavily rumored to be interested in moving down to be able to draft an additional young prospect. Should the Clippers trade away the pick, Brown Jr. and Acuff may very well be selected first as opposed to Wagler.

The bottom line

Regardless, Keaton Wagler will likely hear his name called between picks five and eleven. Though he has some questions to answer once he gets in the league, he is simply too productive and talented at his age to fall significantly in the lottery. The teams that are picking between 10 and 12 are the Milwaukee Bucks, the Golden State Warriors, and the Oklahoma City Thunder. At the end of the day, Wagler is a lottery pick in the NBA Draft.

No matter where he goes, he will carry a chip on his shoulder and prove himself at the highest level.
