Per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Brad Underwood and basketball have landed the commitment of Serbian point guard Mihailo Petrovic. Per Givony, Petrovic is an MVP candidate in his league as he averages 14.3 points and 7.3 assists per game. He is a 22-year-old with professional basketball experience, which fits the “get older” concept that Brad Underwood has gone for this offseason. The Illini are assembling quite an international team. On top of center Tomislav Ivisic returning, they have landed the commitments of Tomislav’s brother, Zvonimir, and Croatian power forward, David Mirkovic.
With Petrovic, the Illini are really leaning into the “Euro U” moniker while also acquiring elite, ready-to-produce talent. In fact, per NBAscoutinglive.com, Petrovic is projected as a second round pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
Impact
Per Arman Jovic of PDTscouting, Mihailo Petrovic is a guard with “elite quickness, finishing and playmaking chops that will quickly make him one of the best guards in the Big 10.” Petrovic will likely assume the role left by Kasparas Jakucionis alongside Kylan Boswell. Though Boswell showed a lot of promise as a playmaker and true point guard towards the end of the 2024-2025 season, he is far more effective sharing lead ball-handler duties with another guard.
Petrovic brings immediate experience and further beefs up the Illini’s perimeter attack. Now, the Illini try to win over some prominent scoring options to complement Tomislav Ivisic and the backcourt of Petrovic and Boswell. If they can land who they think they can get, watch out for Illinois basketball.
