Terrence Shannon Jr. Reassigned to NBA G-league
Former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr will head back to the G-league for the second time this season.
Per the Minnesota Timberwolves PR X account, former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. has been reassigned to the Iowa Wolves of the NBA G-league. Shannon Jr., the 27th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, was recently assigned to the G-league affiliate in late November. While with the Iowa Wolves, Shannon Jr. played two games and averaged 33.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. After completely dominating two games, many were hopeful that Terrence Shannon Jr. would get his opportunity for some real playing time.
However, that unfortunately never came to fruition. Since returning to the Timberwolves roster, Shannon Jr. played a total of 32 minutes in just six games. All of those six games involved garbage time duty for the former Illini star.
Why hasn’t the opportunity come?
The Minnesota Timberwolves have a deep backcourt involving superstar, Anthony Edwards, and role players Donte DiVincenzo and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Veteran point guard, Mike Conley Jr. is perfect as someone to set up offense and catch-and-shoot threes alongside Edwards. However, the Timberwolves have lost 6 of their last 11 games. Despite the losses, Shannon Jr. and fellow first-round draft pick, Rob Dillingham, have barely seen the floor.
You would think that one of the best players in college basketball last year would at least get a look for some playing time. Shannon Jr. is electric in the open court which could favor a high-flying athlete like Anthony Edwards.
However, I fully expect Shannon Jr. to continue the same dominance he portrayed in his first NBA G-league stint.
