Washington Commanders DT May Return Before Season
Per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Illinois Football star and now Washington Commanders DT, Jer’Zhan Newton, underwent successful surgery on his left foot yesterday. Newton suffered a Jones fracture during his final season with Illinois football, however, played through the entire season. He had surgery to repair the fracture on his right foot after the 2023 season concluded. After going through the NFL Draft, Newton was found to have the same injury on his left foot. Washington Commanders head coach, Dan Quinn, did not provide a timetable for Newton’s return.
However, per Schultz, the Commanders are optimistic that Newton will make a full recovery before the start of the regular season in September.

Optimism for the Illinois Football Star?
The news that Jer’zhan Newton will make a full recovery before the start of the 2024 season is great news. Initially, one would worry about recovering from a surgery performed on each foot, however, it seems that there is optimism. Hopefully, this all sets up for Newton to make a return before the end of the 2024 season. This will allow him to get his feet wet on a rather young team in the Washington Commanders. Ben Standig of the Athletic reported that “He’s out for the offseason program. Reasonable speculation: the start of training camp may be optimistic.”
Newton played a good majority of this past season with the injury. He still wreaked havoc and recorded 7.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.

A Jones fracture is a fracture to the base of the pinky bone in the foot.
This area is known as a ‘watershed’ area that has a very poor blood supply and doesn’t heal well.
