As the Illinois football team has finished three games of their season, several standout players are already gaining attention from NFL scouts. With a strong mix of defensive playmakers and offensive line anchors, Illinois is shaping up to have one of its most promising draft classes in years when the 2026 NFL Draft arrives. Here’s a closer look at the Illini players who could hear their names called on draft day.

Gabe Jacas – Linebacker/Edge Rusher

Gabe Jacas has emerged as the face of Illinois’ 2026 draft class. National analysts, including ESPN’s Todd McShay, have already projected Jacas as a potential first-round pick, with some mocks placing him in the mid-20s. His explosive first step, strength off the edge, and ability to disrupt opposing offenses make him a premier NFL prospect. If he continues his upward trajectory, Jacas could become Illinois’ next defensive star to make an early impact in the league.

Xavier Scott – Cornerback

Illinois has quietly developed a reputation for producing elite defensive backs, and Xavier Scott is next in line. Scott’s combination of size, speed, and ball skills has already drawn interest from pro evaluators. Some early projections have him in the Round 1–2 range, depending on how his 2025 season unfolds. With Illinois’ defense leaning heavily on his coverage ability, Scott has the tools to establish himself as one of the top corners in the Big Ten and nationally.

J.C. Davis – Offensive Tackle

On the offensive side of the ball, J.C. Davis anchors the line as a reliable and powerful blocker. Scouts see him as an NFL-caliber tackle, with projections ranging from late first to third round. Davis’s ability to protect the quarterback and open running lanes will be critical for Illinois’ success this season. If he continues to dominate against top-tier Big Ten defensive lines, his stock could soar.

Luke Altmyer – Quarterback

Quarterback Luke Altmyer has shown steady growth as the leader of the Illini offense. With good field vision, improving arm strength, and a strong grasp of the system, Altmyer could rise into the draft picture if he takes another step forward in 2025. Scouts will watch closely to see if he can elevate Illinois’ passing game and prove himself against Big Ten defenses. Some projections have Altymer going in Round 2-4.

Melvin Priestly – Offensive Tackle

Another key piece on the offensive line, Melvin Priestly, brings size and physicality to the trenches. Still developing his consistency, Priestly has the upside to draw NFL attention as a late-round pick if he continues to refine his technique and footwork during the 2025 season.

Josh Kreutz – Center

As the anchor of Illinois’s offensive line, Josh Kreutz has become a reliable leader in the middle. His football IQ, toughness, and ability to make protection calls give him the intangibles scouts look for in NFL centers. With continued strong play, Kreutz could work his way into mid-to-late-round draft consideration.

Josh Gesky – Guard

Gesky’s size and strength make him a force in the interior line. While he remains a developmental prospect, his potential to dominate at the point of attack gives him upside as a future pro. A strong showing in 2025 could push Gesky into the draft conversation.

Matthew Bailey – Safety

On the defensive side, Matthew Bailey is a versatile safety with a nose for the football. Known for his instincts and tackling ability, Bailey has flashed big-play potential when healthy. If he continues to progress, Bailey could position himself as a solid mid-round draft option.

Final Outlook

Illinois football could see multiple names called in the 2026 NFL Draft, with Jacas, Scott, Altmyer, and Davis leading the way as early-round prospects. If Priestly, Kreutz, Gesky, and Bailey take the next step in 2025, Illinois could produce one of its strongest draft classes in recent memory. For head coach Bret Bielema and his staff, this reflects not only on recruiting but also on the program’s growing reputation for developing NFL-ready talent.

The 2026 draft may still be a year away, but it’s already clear: Illinois Football has future pros ready to make their mark.
