Former Illini Andre Curbelo suspended from Southern Miss for “disciplinary reasons”

Per sources of Big Gold Nation, former Illini point guard, Andre Curbelo, has been suspended from the Southern Miss basketball program for “disciplinary reasons”. Curbelo is in his second year with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles after playing two years at Illinois and one year at St. Johns. It has certainly been a rocky road for the former Illini ever since a standout freshman year in which he earned Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year. Andre Curbelo even appeared on some NBA draft boards prior to the 2021-2022 season, however, suffered a concussion in an early season game.

Whether there is a correlation between Curbelo’s on-court and off-court issues is unknown. Regardless, since that injury, nothing has been the same.

Per source, Andre Curbelo is indefinitely suspended from @SouthernMissMBB due to disciplinary issues. Look for Coach Ladner will address the situation after the game today.

A freshman Icon

Curbelo was an absolute stud on an Illinois basketball squad that earned a one-seed. As a freshman, he averaged 9.1 ppg, 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. His feel for the game, passing ability, and flare made him beloved and extremely fun to watch. However, he missed the majority of his Sophomore season with an injury. After a rocky end to the season, Curbelo transferred to St. Johns where he had multiple behavior issues. After transferring out from St Johns, Curbelo went to Southern Miss where he has struggled to find the same flare that made him so impressive as a true freshman.

Andre Curbelo has also grabbed the attention of social media for the wrong reasons. For example, he was seen sitting in the crowd instead of at the end of the bench during a timeout. It is certainly sad to see such a great talent fall from where he was just a few years ago.
