Did former Illini Skyy Clark deserve Orange Krush reception?

Did the former Illini really deserve that?

Illinois basketball gained a key victory over the UCLA Bruins 83-78 in front of an electric State Farm Center. The night was special for several reasons. First, the Illini were able to cool down a red-hot Bruins team that had won 7 games in a row. Illinois started to show glimpses of the type of offense and versatility that piqued the world’s interest at the beginning of January. At the same time, Illini legend Kofi Cockburn sat courtside with his mother and family celebrating his jersey going up into the rafters.

However, there was one point of debate from last night’s Twitterverse that deserved a little bit of attention. That was the way that former Illini guard Skyy Clark was received by the Orange Krush.

Why is there animosity?

Look, Skyy Clark was a five-star commitment for the Illini that had relatively high expectations. After Ayo Dosunmu, Kofi Cockburn, and Trent Frazier all moved on, many deemed Clark as the next Illini great given his five-star status. Additionally, Golden State Warriors guard and former Illini, Brandin Podziemski conveniently transferred out of Illinois likely due to feeling “recruited over” by Skyy Clark and former Illini Jayden Epps. With that being said, Clark looked like most true freshman point guards did. He showed some glimpses of brilliance and explosive shot-making, however, only averaged 7.0 ppg on 41.1 percent from the field.

Clark ended up leaving the team citing mental health issues on January 6th. His loss was certainly a gut punch as the Illini looked lost and sat at 9-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

With that being said, this saga certainly warrants boos and a negative welcome home from the Orange Krush. The Krush delivered that and more.

Continued aftermath.

What made matters even worse was that Clark announced his transfer decision just minutes after Illinois ended their season with a loss to Arkansas. There seemed to be animosity between Clark and the fans as many went after him for quitting on the team. Clark, however, cited his Dad’s health as a driving factor for his departure. He went on to play one season at Louisville and ultimately transferred to UCLA.

Skyy Clark spoke highly of Illinois as the dust settled. In fact, former Illini assistant, Tim Anderson, was on Stephen Bardo‘s podcast saying that Clark and his family called his departure from Illinois “the worst mistake he ever made.”

Anderson added “The relationship there came from one of our former players who played here and went to Louisville“

Bigger fish to fry

I made the argument that the “Skyy is a quitter” chants were unnecessary. Boo’s and chants are a part of home-court advantages and I am not expecting a standing ovation for Clark. However, my biggest issue is how this is the first time that the Orange Krush has specifically singled out a player this year. If we can come after Skyy Clark like that, how come we could not find ways to get under the skin of Wisconsin’s John Tonje, Tennessee’s Zakai Ziegler or Chaz Lanier, or Maryland’s Julian Reese?

These are all high-caliber players that deserve singling out as opposed to Clark. All four players are All-league players and Julian Reese has been decimating Illini front courts for multiple years. Go after Reese, a guy who had 27 points and 17 rebounds on your home court instead of Skyy Clark who averages 7.7 points per game. Ultimately, Clark’s transfer out did not hurt the Illini program as much as fans make it out to be. Inconsistencies and veterans who liked to overdose on caffeine mired that season.

The next year, was a trip to the Elite Eight. Now, Illinois has two NBA draft picks on their roster playing well. Illinois turned out just fine.

Opinions from Ant Wright: An outside perspective

When looking at the situation involving Skyy Clark and Illinois basketball from an outsider’s perspective, it’s crucial to consider the optics of what transpired last night at the State Farm Center.

Looking back at the Tre White recruitment

While Skyy Clark may have played a small part in helping Illinois land Tre White, I think the Illinois staff would have gotten him or a similar player either way. While the gesture of giving Tre the green light for Illinois plays well for the media, I’m inclined to think that Illinois’ ability to secure Tre was strong, with or without Skyy’s involvement.

Illinois is now an established recruiting power both domestically and internationally. This isn’t a situation where one player’s influence is going to make or break a recruitment.

Skyy Clark’s abrupt departure

When you look at Skyy’s time at Illinois, the optics aren’t favorable. To see a true freshman start every game, only to leave the team immediately after coming off the bench for a single game, doesn’t and shouldn’t sit well with the Illini fanbase.

For fans who had high hopes for a talented young player, seeing such a quick 180-degree turn in his role with Illinois was jarring. The decision left many wondering if personal factors, a shift in team dynamics, or something deeper behind the scenes drove it.

The Louisville commitment timing

Then, there’s the timing of his commitment right after Illinois’ loss. The optics here come across as petty, and in a place like Illinois, where fans are some of the most passionate in the country, these things don’t go unnoticed.

The timing was unfortunate, and it solidified the notion that there was more to his departure than just basketball. At the end of the day, this was a slap in the face to the Illinois basketball community.

Passion meets frustration

For fans who are dedicated to the team, the optics of Skyy’s departure leave a bitter taste, one that won’t easily be forgotten. This situation serves as a reminder that in college basketball, the public’s perception can quickly shift, and even the smallest moves can have a lasting impact. Fans have booed others for less.
