DeKalb (IL) native Davon Grant made a significant impact when he gave Illinois Football their first in-state pledge in the Class of 2026. He certainly set the tone for Illinois, in a class boasting high potential within the Land of Lincoln.
As the third overall commit in this early recruiting class, Grant’s decision was a crucial step in building what has turned into an impressive group of talent thus far for Illinois. Fast forward, and the Fighting Illini are sitting within the top 10 of the 247 Recruiting Team Rankings, boasting 10 commits, three of which are from in-state recruits—a trend kicked off by Grant’s commitment, with more undoubtedly on the way.
As a junior, the 6’4″, 200-pound wide receiver showcased his talent on the field with a remarkable season for the Barbs. Grant recorded a whopping 1,016 yards and 7 touchdowns on 67 receptions in 2024, turning heads across the state and, of course, drawing the attention of Illinois’ coaching staff.
Despite receiving offers from other prominent programs such as Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, some even suggesting he play on the defensive side of the ball, Grant’s commitment to Illinois underscores the Fighting Illini staff’s decision to keep him in his comfort zone on the offensive side of the ball. With Davon’s impressive and rare combination of size and versatility, he is poised to become a valuable addition to Coach Justin Stepp’s talented wide receiver unit in the years to come.
We recently caught up with Davon to get his perspective on why staying home with Illinois Football was the best decision for him, as a Northern Illinois native.

What’s It Like as a DeKalb Native to Have Coach Bielema and Illinois Football in Pursuit?
Not only did Davon feel honored to be recruited by his home state Fighting Illini, but he also recognized that Illinois’ staff had the experience and success to back up their promises. The strong leadership of Coach Bielema and the proven track record of Coach Stepp helped solidify his decision.
“It feels great,” says Grant. “I committed because of the way Coach B is doing things and how much he’s improved the program. Coach Stepp… everyone he’s coached puts me in a good headspace—because I feel like I will be cared for and developed.”
He concludes, “Being an in-state player, it really means a lot.”
What Separated Illinois Staff From Other Great Coaches Davon Considered Along the Way?
Ultimately, what set Coach Bielema’s staff apart, was their consistency and unwavering values of being Tough, Smart, and Dependable.
“The thing that sets coach B’s staff apart is consistency. They stand and believe in the same things that coach B stands for.”
Did Illinois’ Recent Success in the Passing Game Help Davon’s Decision?
According to the talented receiver, Illinois’ recent success in the passing game played a significant role in his decision to commit to the Illini.
“It was a pretty big influence. It showed me that they weren’t afraid of the passing game.” said the lengthy wideout. He continued, “It also showed they play a very balanced offense.”
Thoughts on Illinois’ Early Top-10 2026 Recruiting Class?
“I think that the rest of this class is a great fit for this team. It’s just going to continue to trend up from here.”
