Illinois basketball has a roster built to win now
The Illini will have a strong blend of new talent and returning veterans that should make them one of the contenders in the Big Ten Conference.

Despite a solid season, winning over 20 games for yet another season, Illinois basketball found themselves facing yet another roster rebuild. The Illini, however, have responded with an impressive offseason haul. Per Bart Torvik rankings, Illinois basketball currently sits in the preseason top-8 despite losing three of their top five scoring options. The roster is a solid blend of new talent and continuity from the heart of last year’s team. Experience, age and continuity frequently win in college basketball. Brad Underwood recognized this and used the Illinois basketball brand to fully reload in the NIL Era.
The NIL era
Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) has transformed the landscape of college sports since its debut in the summer of 2021, and this offseason, it has reached unprecedented heights. Top-tier players now command more than $3 million in NIL compensation, with Texas Tech All-American JT Toppin reportedly setting the bar at $4 million.
While exact figures remain unofficial, it’s been widely reported that several powerhouse programs are operating with NIL budgets in the $10–12 million range. On April 11, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported that at least ten programs have reached the $10 million mark. Those programs include Arkansas, BYU, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, St. John’s, and Texas Tech.
The 10 Million Dollar club
On April 30, Norlander reported on his podcast that Illinois basketball had joined this elite group, assembling a $10+ million roster after the recent addition of Cal transfer and former McDonald’s All-American Andrej Stojakovic. That kind of investment positions Illinois among the top 10–15 biggest spenders in the nation.
Athletic Director Josh Whitman and Illinois Athletics have clearly backed head coach Brad Underwood with the resources he needs to build a championship-level roster. With Illinois reportedly joining the “$10 million club,” expectations among fans will skyrocket – and rightfully so. Fortunately for Illini fans, this roster is built to win now.
