Illini head coach Bret Bielema was the leadoff man at the 2026 Big Ten Media Day in Chicago, Illinois. The Illini head coach has led off Big Ten Media Day for the past four years and has certainly been an entertaining listen ever since joining the conference six years ago. Bielema started his press conference by reflecting on the journey he has had ever since representing the University of Iowa as a student-athlete.

“I’m walking in with coach Fry and Mike Devlin, and they say they never ask players any questions. Never. I got the first question of the day.”

“Last year they took us to Vegas; that was the spot where I met my wife. We met in Vegas, and our first date was in Chicago.”

The dig at the SEC?

Though Bret Bielema has worked in both the Big Ten and SEC conferences, there are no questions about where his current loyalties lie. When discussing the forward thinking of the Big Ten conference and commissioner Tony Petitti, Bielema wasted no time in dropping a subtle jab at the SEC

“But to see the growth of this league to get to where we are now — I spent a couple years in the SEC, was with Slive and then transitioned to Sankey. And I just think about it now, everybody is going to have opinions, and obviously they’re going to draw the Big Ten/SEC and all that goes around about that. But to sit in the room with both of those guys, I think with Tony and the vision and experience that he has, and to be in the room. I know (Greg Sankey has) got to protect the SEC and they kind of want to live in 2005 forever, but I think the forward thinking of where we are in college football is an awesome thing,” Bielema said.

There is no doubt that Bielema just added fuel to the debate of which conference is superior. The SEC or the Big Ten.
