Former Illinois All-Big Ten edge rusher Gabe Jacas has officially signed his rookie contract with the New England Patriots, ending a lengthy negotiation and sending one of the most accomplished defensive players in recent Illini history to one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.

The Patriots selected Jacas No. 55 overall in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, moving up to secure one of the Big Ten’s most productive edge defenders after he established himself as one of Illinois’ most impactful defensive players under Bret Bielema. With his rookie deal now in place, Jacas will join Mike Vrabel’s crew for training camp as the Patriots look to make another Super Bowl run in 2027.

According to several reports, the former Illini has signed a 4-year, $8.6M contract with the 2026 league runner-up.

Gabe Jacas Contract Details: What Delayed the 4-Year, $8.6M Rookie Contract?

Jacas notably finished his Illinois career as one of the most accomplished defensive players in program history. In fact, the three-time All-Big Ten selection, Freshman All-American, and two-time Phil Steele All-American recorded 183 tackles, 35.5 tackles for loss, 27 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries during his four seasons in Champaign. Impressively, His 27 career sacks rank second in Illinois program history, trailing only Simeon Rice.

The Patriots saw enough from Jacas’ production and versatility to make him an early second-round selection, adding him to a defense that will look to utilize his ability as both a pass rusher and run defender. The signing process took longer than expected, with Jacas becoming the final unsigned second-round pick from the 2026 NFL Draft before the two sides reached an agreement.

The delay centered around contract negotiations, partially concerning an arthroscopic procedure to clean up his knee. That said, both sides were eventually able to finalize the four-year rookie deal and begin preparing Jacas for training camp.

Now that all is said and done, the former Illini edge rusher will finally begin the next chapter of his career in New England.
