Illinois Basketball is just hours away from facing (12-8) Nebraska on the road. Despite their talent, the Cornhuskers are in a major slump, having dropped six straight games.

Last 6 Games: 97-87 Iowa (OT) – Purdue 68-104 – Rutgers 82-85 – Maryland 66-69 – USC 78-73 – Wisconsin 83-55

However, despite a recent decline, Underwood believes Fred Hoiberg’s squad remains a tough challenge for the Illini on the road.

Of course, Illinois has battled some recent struggles of their own, dropping 3 of their last 5 games, including back-to-back losses to Michigan State and Maryland. Notably, the first consecutive loss for Underwood and the Illini since the 2022-23 season. Additionally, Illness has recently sidelined talented big man Tomislav Ivisic for the unforeseen future. Not ideal, when Nebraska has some talented size.

Nevertheless, Illinois rebounded with a dominant win over in-state rival Northwestern and now aims to build momentum heading into February, continuing their push in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Underwood on “Very Good” Nebraska Group

Underwood is firm that the Huskers are in no way a team to overlook, despite recent a recent steak of losses.

“Next up’s Nebraska – a team that this year has been elite on the defensive side. I think they were as high as 4 maybe in the KenPom. On the Defensive side, they do what they do,” Underwood emphasized, boasting the strength of Huskers.

“Fred’s got another very very good group.”

The Illini head coach continued, “They force you into some things offensively that they are very comfortable with, in terms of guarding. Bryce Williams is having just an outstanding year, playing on the ball for them. (Juwan) Gary has had some very big games, those are very familiar names. A name that’s switched jerseys, but, being familiar with the Big Ten – (Connor) Essegian is having a fabulous year, shooting 40%+ (40.8%) from three, and double-digit scorer.”

Underwood concluded by acknowledging the challenge of facing a team with a chip on their shoulder, on their turf. “Great environment. Pinnacle Bank’s is one of the great arenas in the league, and the Husker fans show up. Expecting a tough night.”

Will the Huskers give Illinois Basketball the challenge Underwood anticipates?
