Coleman Hawkins Further Discusses Mutual Split from Illinois Basketball
Coleman Hawkins jumped on the Sleepers Media show with Greg Waddell and Carter Elliott for a show that went over an hour. The three discussed a variety of topics ranging from Hawkins’ future at Kansas State to different events during his time at Illinois. One notable topic was the mutual split between Illinois Basketball and Coleman. Most Illini fans were very aware that Coleman Hawkins seemed set on leaving Illinois basketball in some capacity once the season ended. However, most assumed that Hawkins was set on leaving for the NBA draft as opposed to another year of college basketball.
Despite this, most fans assumed wrong. Hawkins stated that he received mostly positive feedback from NBA personnel, however, made a “business decision” to return to college basketball. The story aligns with the fact that Coleman Hawkins felt done with the routine of going to class and college basketball practice. Additionally, Hawkins will reportedly make 2 million dollars in NIL money.
Who initiated the Split?
Greg Waddell asked Hawkins whether the Illini had started the “split” talks or if Coleman did. Coleman stated that he was the one who initiated talks of parting ways. Despite this, he maintained a strong relationship with the staff of Illinois Basketball. In fact, head coach Brad Underwood spoke to the Sacramento native regarding Kansas State. Underwood previously attended Kansas State as a player and also coached there under Frank Martin from 2006-2012.
