David Mirkovic flashes major star potential in close loss vs Michigan State
Mirkovic is showing the potential to be one of the best players in the conference should he return for the 2026-2027 season.
David Mirkovic showed off a very versatile skill set in the Illini’s loss to Michigan State. Though it was tough to see the Illini’s 12-game losing streak end and Keaton Wagler’s first off-game, Mirkovic flashed major star potential with the way he played. Mirkovic finished off with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in 36 minutes of action. Michigan State did what most teams are expected to do to the Illini from here on out. They attempted to make Keaton Wagler uncomfortable and make him work for each and every one of his buckets. The Spartans were very physical with Wagler, and that showed in his 2-for-16 shooting performance
The Illini, however, adjusted by having David Mirkovic run the offense for multiple possessions. The 6-foot-9 forward looked extremely comfortable with the ball in his hands and even ran pick-and-roll to get his teammates some easy looks.
Comfortable and in a rhythm
For as well as Keaton Wagler has been this season, David Mirkovic has been just as impressive as a freshman. In conference play, Mirkovic averages 12.2 points and 7.5 rebounds on 41.8 percent from the three-point line. If Mirk can continue to play with controlled aggression, rebound the ball well, and become an even better ball-handler, look for him to be one of the best players in the conference.
Imagine Mirkovic running pick-and-rolls next year like how Danny Wolf did at Michigan or how Joshua Jefferson is dominating at Iowa State. David Mirkovic has that potential.
