Former Illini Kasparas Jakucionis drafted by the Miami Heat
The 19 year old Lithuanian point guard has made his NBA dream come true after one year in Champaign.
Former Illini guard, Kasparas Jakucionis, has been drafted by the Miami Heat with the 20th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Jakucionis is the first-ever one-and-done prospect from the University of Illinois. He is the third draft pick in the Brad Underwood era. Kasparas joins Ayo Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr. as the two former Illini who have played for Brad Underwood and are now NBA players. During his one year in the Orange and Blue, Kasparas Jakucionis averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. He quickly asserted himself as one of the best freshmen in the country and looked like a top-five pick to start the season. However, a forearm injury certainly derailed his season somewhat, despite an otherwise standout freshman season. That reflected in Jakucionis’s draft position
At just 19 years old, however, Jakucionis has a world of untapped potential. He has a unique mix of size and playmaking that makes him an extremely intriguing combo guard at the next level.
The NBA outlook?
At just 19 years old, Jakucionis has a lot of room to grow. He will not be as ball-dominant as he was during his time at Illinois, which will certainly force him to grow in other aspects of his game. Though he has exceptional playmaking skills, he struggles getting separation due to his limited athleticism. As a result, he needs to improve his catch-and-shoot skills and defensive abilities. If he can hone those two aspects of his game, he should have a similar role to that of former Illini Brandin Podziemski. Podziemski has a similar frame and style to Jakucionis. However, he has become an exceptional rebounder and secondary ball-handler for the Golden State Warriors.
On the Heat, he will have to grow as a complementary player. Regardless, Jakucionis is set for a very long professional basketball career.
