Former Illini Kofi Cockburn to have jersey honored on February 11th
King Kofi gets his time to shine back in Champaign.
Former Illini basketball star, Kofi Cockburn, will have his jersey honored at the State Farm Center on February 11th. On that date, Illinois basketball will be played Cockburn played for the Illini from 2019-2022 and averaged 17.2 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game through three years. Kofi was pivotal to the Illini’s resurgence to the top tier of the Big Ten and had a storied career while at Champaign. After committing to Illinois amidst a tough loss at home to Florida Atlantic, Cockburn completely changed the way that the Illini play.
His presence in the middle complimented the perimeter talents of Ayo Dosunmu, Trent Frazier, and Andres Feliz. Cockburn joins Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr. as the three Illini of the Brad Underwood era to have their jerseys honored. Shannon Jr. will have his jersey honored just a few days after on February 15th vs Michigan State.
Since dominating in Champaign..
Kofi Cockburn came to Champaign at the perfect time for the Illini. The program was on the rise and just needed some size in the middle to complement the talented stable of guards. However, it is unfortunate that Cockburn could not take full advantage of NIL. Kofi Cockburn would have made an absolute killing in NIL and it would have likely convinced him to stay a few more years in Champaign. Since leaving, Cockburn tried his hand at the NBA however was not a draft pick. Now Kofi is playing in Korea and seems to be doing quite well.
