Former Illinois Basketball Star is Playing in the NBA Summer League
The summer league is almost always a quiet time for Illinois Basketball fans. In recent years, Ayo Dosunmu made his NBA start in the summer league and did quite well. Kofi Cockburn also tried his hand at the NBA with the Utah Jazz, however did not make the final roster as an undrafted free agent. Some players like Brandon Paul and Rayvonte Rice have made appearances with a variety of teams. Paul had quite a showing multiple years ago which led to a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs. This summer is a similar story. Matthew Mayer is currently playing with the Houston Rockets, however he did not see the floor in their first game.
Malcolm Hill continues to try his hand at the NBA. After a year long stint with the Chicago Bulls, Hill is playing this summer with Orlando Magic.
An underrated star.
Malcolm Hill was a large part of my college basketball experience at Illinois. Hill gave his heart to Illinois for four years, and it was a shame that he never experienced an NCAA tournament. Hill was one of the most consistent players prior to Brad Underwood’s arrival in Champaign. Despite the team’s struggles, Hill is the 3rd all-time leading scorer in Illinois Basketball history. The quiet, in-state native quickly became a fan favorite and has continued to work towards the NBA dream.
Malcolm spent a few years overseas and has played quite well. Afterwards, he spent time in the NBA G-league. Hill has become a solid 3-and-D player who adds a strong veteran presence to the culture of the team. Hill was called upon during the year COVID-19 was an issue and capitalized on his opportunity. This led him to become a member of the Chicago Bulls full-time roster. Hill was unfortunately waived by the Bulls mid-season and played well in the G-league afterwards.
Continuing to chip away
Hill also played last year’s summer league. Hill was a starter and averaged double digit points while playing solid defense. Malcolm is on the Orlando Magic this year, alongside a plethora of Michigan Wolverines. The Belleville native played 12 minutes in their first game, however had 5 points and 5 rebounds. On a young team like Orlando, Malcolm Hill could possibly find his way given that he is a solid veteran who can be a strong example for the young guys. As an NBA journeyman, Hill continues to improve his game and round out a solid 3-and-D profile.
Regardless, Malcolm Hill will remain one of Illinois Basketball’s most beloved for all of his efforts.
