How Will Riley Led Illinois Basketball to Victory
The Illini’s freshman turned heads in the round of 64

The best version of this young, yet talented Illinois basketball team showed up on Friday evening, as the Illini rattled off an impressive double-digit victory over Sean Miller’s 11th-seeded Xavier Musketeers 86-73.
The Round of 64 battle turned into a showcase for the Illini’s youth movement, with international freshmen Tomislav Ivisic, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Will Riley combining for 58 of the team’s 86 points in what proved to be a much-needed, tone-setting victory for Illinois. Despite a record-setting performance from Ivisic and an exciting, high-energy night from Jakucionis, Canadian wing Will Riley stole the show as the best player on the court in Milwaukee.
In 33 minutes of action, Riley displayed his elite shot-making ability, knocking down 3-of-4 shots from deep (75%) and finishing an efficient 8-of-12 from the field (66.7%) en route to a 22-point performance. His offensive prowess was matched by relentless defensive effort—arguably his best of the season—as he recorded 2 blocks (tying Morez Johnson Jr. and Ivisic) and grabbed 4 defensive rebounds.
A performance that not only propelled Illinois to victory but additionally, his NBA draft stock as well.

Jonathan Givony on Illinois Basketball Freshman Will Riley’s “Phenomenal Performance”
ESPN NBA and draft analyst Jonathan Givony had high praise for Riley’s performance following Illinois’ opening-round victory. The expert even went as far to call the strong showing a “Phenomenal Performance. Undoubtedly, a great sign for Will, prior to Junes NBA Draft.

For head coach Brad Underwood, seeing his freshman phenom step up on the biggest stage was a welcome sight. Illinois has had its fair share of tournament heartbreaks, but this year’s squad might have the firepower to make a deep run. Can Riley keep his hot streak going against the looming Kentucky Wildcats and help send the Illini back to the Sweet 16?
