Illini coach Shauna Green building case for Big Ten Coach of the Year
The third year head coach is exceeding all expectations
Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s basketball is currently 20-5 and 10-4 for the 2024-2025 season. The Illini have won seven games in a row and are heading into the final stretch of their season. Currently, the Illini sit at fourth in the Big Ten and project as an eight-seed in the NCAA tournament per ESPN. There is no doubt that third-year head coach of the Illini Shauna Green deserves massive recognition and praise for her job this year and for her time in Champaign. Green is energetic, relentless, and determined in her approach to reviving the Illini women’s basketball program.
There is no doubt that she should be a strong candidate for Big Ten Coach of the Year.
The Metrics
Despite some key injuries to star players, Gretchen Dolan and Makira Cook, Shauna Green has her crew looking cohesive and hungry. The Illini continue to harp on fundamentals as they currently rank third in free throw percentage at 80.5 %. Per BartTorvik, the Illini sit at number 28 overall. To finish out their season, they have a number of difficult games.
They will play the top two teams in the Big Ten, UCLA, and USC as part of their trip to the West Coast. If Shauna Green can help lead her team to one victory out west and win the rest of their games, look out for that Big Ten Coach of the Year award.
Make sure everyone goes to the State Farm Center on Sunday, February 16th at 4 pm for what will be a fun matchup vs Nebraska.
