Illini DB Xavier Scott announces return for 2026 season
Scott returning with Matthew Bailey and Juice Clarke give the Illini an elite secondary.
NEWS: Senior defensive back Xavier Scott has announced on his social media page that he will be returning to Champaign, Illinois for the 2026 season. Scott was mulling a jump to the NFL, however, Illinois has successfully convinced the talented defensive back to return to the program. Scott will play in his fifth season in Champaign.
What does it mean?
Scott played in three games this season before a season-ending lower leg injury during the Western Michigan game. Prior to that, Xavier Scott was widely considered as a day-one NFL draft pick, including some mock drafts showing him in the first round. During the 2024 season, Scott had 49 tackles, 2.0 TFLs, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, four interceptions, and six pass breakups. Despite injuries, Xavier could have very well gone onto the professional ranks; however has the chance to build a lasting legacy in Champaign with one more year.
In addition to Xavier Scott, the Illini return seniors Matthew Bailey and Juice Clarke to their secondary. This secondary is proven production and should be a strong suit of the Illini’s. The Illini also bring in exciting young talent, Nick Hankins, to their defensive back room.
