Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. just put together two career-high performances within the last week. This time, the former Illini led the team in scoring with 25 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Timberwolves continue to battle for prime playoff positioning, however, they fell to the red-hot Lakers 111-102. Shannon Jr. had yet another efficient night from the floor recording 25 points on 9 of 15 from the field, including knocking down all six of his free throw attempts.
The Timberwolves are currently pretty banged up and their star player, Anthony Edwards, was ejected from the game in the third quarter. However, guards Mike Conley and Donte DiVincenzo played last night and Terrence Shannon Jr. still logged 29 minutes off the bench.
Terrence Shannon Jr. showed that he was NBA-ready during his last year at Illinois. However, his path to playing time has been a long time coming. Shannon Jr. had two G-league stints and several DNPs before this moment. Despite that, he has shown that he belongs in the NBA throughout the past month. In the last six games, the former Illini has averaged 24.2 minutes per game while averaging 13.2 ppg, 5.0 RPG, and 2.3 APG on 53.5% from the field. He also has not missed any of his 16 free throw attempts in this stretch. The next step for Terrence will be his perimeter shot as he is only shooting 3 of 13 from three during this six-game stretch.
Reports also indicate that star guard Anthony Edwards will be suspended for Friday’s Timberwolves game vs Utah. Edwards has 16 technical fouls on the season hence he is at risk of missing more games should he continue to pile up technical fouls.
