For the first time since April 2nd, 2005, Illinois Basketball is headed to the Final Four, with Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies standing as the last test between the Illini and their first national title appearance in 21 years. In celebration, a sea of orange and blue packed the area outside the Bielfeldt Athletics Administration Building on Wednesday to give their beloved 2026 team a proper sendoff to Indianapolis (IN).

Notably, Illinois is currently a -2.5 favorite (ESPN and FanDuel) for the 5:09 PM CST (TBS) rematch showdown, despite having dropped a 13-point loss (74-61) to the Huskies earlier this season on the road at the United Center in Chicago. Of course, that hard-fought defeat came at a much different point in the season, and with far higher stakes now on the line, this Illinois team has since evolved into its most complete version of its identity. In many ways, it’s a very different identity for the Illini altogether.

With the program’s largest moment in over two decades ahead, head coach Brad Underwood, AD Josh Whitman, and Senior captain Kylan Boswell addressed the crowd of Illinois faithful and really let the moment sink in, as fans sent the team off to Indy with some juice.

What was each of their message to the Illini fans, students, and staffers, who make it all possible?

Illinois Basketball HC Brad Underwood: “We’re Going There to Kick Ass.”

Coach Brad Underwood spoke about what it meant to reach the Final Four at his “dream job” – a goal he’s consistently pointed out since taking the reins back in 2017. Underwood additionally addressed the significance of the program’s first trip to the national semifinal since the Bruce Weber era, reflecting on this 2026 team’s journey, and the opportunity that remains ahead in Indianapolis.

“This team is very special. If you haven’t figured that out yet…. Not just because of the wins, but because of their personalities, and because of their connectivity. Because of their love and passion for the game of basketball. But, most importantly, they’re playing for the name on the front of their jersey. And that’s what all of you (the fans, students, alumni, staff) represent.

This great university… the 60,000+ students… we have one of the largest alumni bases in the country… You guys – we’re doing this for you. The memories that we’re creating, I hope last a lifetime. I hope that we have a much, much bigger celebration on Tuesday, or Wednesday, or whenever that is….

I’ve said – this is my dream job. This was the goal from day one – to get to a Final Four and to win a national championship. We talk about it every single year, we’re living that, enjoy it. We’re going there to kick ass.”

AD Josh Whitman: “I Hope You Enjoy Every Bit of This”

AD Josh Whitman highlighted exactly what this moment represents not just for the team themselves, but for the lasting impact on the Illinois Basketball program, the University of Illinois, and it’s fan/alumni base. Above all, however, he, the 10th-year athletic director, pointed to the people who helped make the journey possible.

“We talked for years about what’s possible for this Fighting Illini basketball program. We’ve talked about the role that everybody has to play, and these guys (points to the team) know better than anyone what a difference it makes when they walk into that building (State Farm Center) on a Saturday afternoon, or a weeknight evening, and it’s full of passion and orange and blue fans…

We thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for everything you have done to put this team in a position to have success. So thanks, guys (the fans), I hope you enjoy every bit of this.”

Whitman also gave a special shoutout to the University’s athletic department staff, whose efforts have helped lead Illinois athletics into a new era of success.

“I want to thank our staff. We’ve got our 300 Fighting Illini staff here…. everybody plays a role, and anytime we have success, this staff has been incredible. They’re selfless, they’re tireless, and they do so much to make sure we have a chance to compete at the highest level, and it’s just an incredible honor that we have the chance to work with them each and every day.”

Whitman on Coach Brad Underwood

“He has given everything he has to this University, and this basketball program… He’s had a vision, he has been relentless in pursuing that vision, and we are all the beneficiaries of his leadership and his support. So, coach, on behalf of all of us, thank you and congratulations.”

Whitman on the Lasting Impact of this 2026 Final Four Team

“When our student-athletes come here, we have a big meeting across the street at the State Farm Center. We tell them, ‘if you come here, and you do something special – this is a place that will never forget you.’ This is now a program that will forever be remembered. You think about ’89, you think about ’05, you’re now gonna think about ’26. These guys need to understand the legacy that they have now created for themselves and this university, that will live on long, LONG after their time on this campus is over.

Now, you’re going to have to make sure to hold me accountable for this, but they’re not going to have to buy a drink the rest of their lives here…

Kylan Boswell: A Message to Illini Fans

Senior captain Kylan Boswell shifted the focus to the bond between this team and the passionate Illini fanbase that has supported them every step of the way. For the Champaign native who grew up rooting for the Fighting Illini, it’s a full-circle moment to now be leading the orange and blue to the Final Four. For Boswell, the ask is simple… Make the drive 2-hours east, and pack Lucas Oil Stadium.

“We want to thank everybody. None of this is possible (without the fans) – we all are appreciative of everything you guys do for us, and for all the love and support throughout the season.”

The senior guard closed by stating, “We just want to see everybody up in Indy rooting for us. Pack out the crowd. We just want to say thank you and we love you guys so much.”
