Illinois Basketball News: Jakucionis a “Game-Day” Decision vs USC
The Illini may have to take on another Big Ten team without their star guard.
Kasparus Jakucionis a “Game-Day” Decision for Illinois Basketball vs USC
Prior to the Fighting Illini’s 91-52 thrashing of Penn State in Champaign, Illinois Basketball fans received the unwelcome news that star freshman Kasparas Jakucionis would unexpectedly be scratched from the Illini’s starting lineup due to a mysterious forearm injury.
Thankfully, coach Brad Underwood and the Illini had no problem putting away the Nittany Lions (12-4) despite being a man down. Certainly, it was an impressive win for Illinois considering PSU’s recent 81-70 victory over Matt Painter and no. 8 Purdue. Huge performances from F Morez Johnson Jr., G Ben Humrichous, and G Tre White fueled the momentous victory, exemplifying the Illini’s “next man up” mentality, in addition to highlighting Illinois talented depth.
However, the status of Jakucionis still remains unclear as Illinois Basketball prepares for USC. According to coach Underwood, the talented Freshman guard is currently a gameday decision vs USC. To date, KJ averages 16.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, all while shooting 49.6% from the field.
His stellar play has positioned him as a potential NBA lottery pick, leaving fans eagerly awaiting status updates and hopeful for his return and a strong finish to the 2025 season.
KJ Update From Underwood
Underwood: “I think we’ll wait until tomorrow (1/11 vs USC) and see what that game-day decision looks like,“ stated Underwood in his Friday (1/10) media availability.
“We’ll see….. We’ll just see what it looks like tomorrow,” Underwood stated hesitantly, not wanting to give away to much info at this time.
