Illinois Football Commit Cade Newman Explains Why He Chose Bret Bielema and the Illini

Illinois football’s 2027 recruiting class has seen a surge of momentum over the past month or so, and seemingly, it all started when three-star Ankeny (IA) tight end Cade Newman kicked off early June by announcing his intentions to play for Bret Bielema and the Fighting Illini.

Newman’s pledge helped spark a wave of recent additions on the recruiting trail for Coach Bielema’s staff, with Illinois adding 10 more commitments since his June 6th announcement. With 15 verbals currently locked in, the Illini are quickly approaching what is expected to be the cap for their smaller 2027 class. 

Newman, the Hawkeye State standout, saw something special developing in Champaign.  He also built strong relationships with tight ends coach Jared Elliott and head coach Bret Bielema throughout the recruiting process. 

I recently caught up with Cade to discuss why Champaign felt like home for a young man from Central Iowa. Additionally, we discussed how the coaching staff envisions utilizing him in the offense, what Illini fans can expect from his game, and why he believes the future of Illinois football is only getting brighter from here.

Why Illinois Football Felt Like Home

Leaving home wasn’t an easy decision for Newman. As one of Iowa’s top prospects in the 2027 class, he had plenty of opportunities to stay closer to home, including a strong push from coach Jimmy Rogers‘ staff at Iowa State. In the end, however, the relationships he built with Jared Elliott and Bret Bielema made Illinois stand out above the rest.

“Coming down to Illinois felt like home pretty quick,” Newman stated. “Getting to know the coaching staff was a huge part in my decision. The relationship me and coach Elliott have is amazing – he’s a big reason why I ended up choosing Illinois. Also, coach Bielema was awesome. It felt like he truly cared about me and my development from the meetings I had with him. He also connected with not just me, but my family as well, and that means a lot to me.“

He continued, “I have a lot of respect for Iowa State and the opportunities I had closer to home, but I knew Illinois was where I wanted to spend my college career.”

A Vision for His Future

Another key factor in Newman’s decision to play for Illinois was the way Coach Bielema’s staff laid out a clear plan for his development. Throughout the recruiting process, the staff showed Newman how they envision utilizing his skill set and developing him into a complete, every-down tight end in Barry Lunney Jr’s offense.

“The coaching staff envisions me playing the true Y position,” Cade stated. “From the meetings we had with coach Elliott, they envision me being in many roles on the offense. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play tight end in the best conference in college football, and  very excited to get to work with Coach Elliott because I’ve seen the work he has done with TEs in the past.“

What Illini Fans Can Expect

While Cade believes his biggest strength currently comes in the passing game, he takes just as much pride in doing the little things that often go unnoticed. That said, he’s excited to get to work with Jared Elliot to sharpen that skill set even further. 

“I’m very excited to improve every aspect of my game at Illinois,” says Newman. “I would describe my playing style as high effort. I’m willing to do the dirty work and finish blocks. But, then I can also go line up 1-on-1 with a corner and be able to make contested catches.”

He added, “I would say my biggest strength of my game is in the pass game.” Of course, that isn’t necessarily surprising given the production he’s shown at the high school level. Standing in at an athletic 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, it’s clear why Newman believes his biggest strength comes in the passing game. That combination of size, physicality, and playmaking ability is exactly what Illinois looks for in a modern Big Ten tight end, giving Newman the opportunity to impact the offense in multiple ways.

Excited About the Direction of Illinois Football

Like many of the players joining the 2027 class, Newman sees Illinois as a program trending in the right direction following back-to-back 9+ win seasons and consecutive bowl victories over SEC opponents South Carolina and Tennessee. With confidence in Bielema, Elliott, and the rest of the coaching staff, Cade is excited about what this recruiting class can accomplish together over the next several years.

“I think the 2027 recruiting class that we have right now is incredible,” he states. “I’m very excited about this program…. I have a lot of trust in Coach Bielema and the rest of the staff, and I’m very excited with the way the program is trending in the right direction.”
