Jake Davis navigates a deep Illinois basketball wing rotation

The Illinois basketball wing group is one of the deepest in the conference

Jake Davis is a sharpshooting transfer from Mercer, who is entering a program in transition with high expectations. With Illinois basketball losing its top two scorers, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Marcus Domask, it looked like Davis could find a quick path to playing time. But as the offseason unfolded, Davis watched as Illinois continued to add talent, significantly bolstering the wing position.

Davis had a solid season at Mercer, but Davis finds himself surrounded by highly touted wings. After Davis committed at the start of April, Illinois kept loading up on the wings. A week later, Louisville’s Tre White joined, followed by Carey Booth from Notre Dame. By April 30th, Ben Humrichous was on board, and two months later, Will Riley reclassified to 2024 and committed. With these additions and Ty Rodgers returning, Illinois’ wing depth quickly became one of the deepest and strongest in the conference especially when you add Lithuanian NBA prospect 6’5″ Kasparas Jakucionis, creating a steep uphill battle for Davis to get on the floor.

A critical time for growth

Given the roster depth, Davis may find himself starting the season on the scout team. The role is far from glamorous, but vital to his development. This is a scenario that will test his mental toughness but also allow him to play freely without pressure. The spotlight isn’t on, and the minutes in games might not come immediately, but it’s in these moments that Davis can grow as a player.

This is where Jake Davis has to understand that his role, however limited, still matters. Practices will be his battleground to prove he belongs in the rotation. While some players crumble when they aren’t handed immediate playing time, the ones who embrace the grind often find themselves called upon when injuries, foul trouble, or slumps hit those ahead of them in the pecking order.

Jake Davis must stay ready

The reality is, players like Davis are often just one moment away from stepping into a larger role. I’ve seen players take their foot off the gas when they’re out of the rotation, only to miss their chance when a window opens. On the other hand, I’ve seen those who stayed locked in, continued to work on their game, and brought it every day in practice, and were ready to capitalize when their opportunity came.

For Davis, shooting will be his ticket to minutes because Illinois will need floor spacers. Though his path might be blocked right now, the door to significant playing time could open at any time during the season. I know he’s supposed to fill some type of Luke Goode role, but it won’t be handed to him. I think this year’s wing spot is deeper than last season. Not as good, but more weapons to utilize.

The influx of talent at Illinois isn’t a sign that Jake Davis isn’t valued. It’s a reminder that competition is constant, and only the strongest, most prepared players thrive in these situations. This season may not start with his name in the spotlight, but it doesn’t mean it can’t end that way.
