Terrence Shannon Jr. shows defensive potential in second game
Former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. showed a different side to his game in his second Summer League game.
Terrence Shannon Jr. was able to show some defensive capabilities in his second game at the 2024 NBA Summer League. After an explosive scoring output in his debut, Shannon Jr. once again impressed, however, did so on the defensive side of the ball. In addition to 19 points on an efficient shot profile, Shannon Jr. had 2 steals and 3 blocks. The former Illini star has impressive athleticism to add along to his length and defensive instincts. If he is able to continue solid play on the defensive side of the ball, then Shannon Jr. should not have any problem finding the floor in the NBA.
Again, Shannon Jr. and the Minnesota Timberwolves won their game. This time against the Indiana Pacers in a decisive 105-94 victory. Of note, former Illinois basketball player Giorgi Bezhanishvili is on the Indiana Pacers Summer League roster. However, Bezhanishvili unfortunately received his second straight DNP. On Saturday, Marcus Domask played a total of 7 minutes in his first summer league game. Additionally, Quincy Guerrier also received a DNP for the Toronto Raptors.
A part of Terrence Shannon Jr.’s game that went under the radar after he took on a big scoring load in his senior season: his defensive upside

A strong draft choice by Minnesota
It is pretty remarkable that Terrence Shannon Jr. was selected with the 27th overall pick. There was no doubt that Terrence was one of the best players in college basketball, however, many teams seemed to prefer younger prospects. That decision is already looking foolish as Shannon Jr. is proving he is an NBA ready prospect with his first two games. Terrence Shannon Jr. and the Minnesota Timberwolves will next take the floor on Tuesday evening against the Philadelphia 76ers.
