The Sky is not falling, Illinois Basketball will be alright

The metrics still favor Illinois as one of the top teams in the country.

Illinois basketball, unfortunately, lost a home game vs Nebraska on Saturday, December 13th. Make no mistake, the loss was extremely disappointing no matter how good Nebraska is. The Illini looked a step slow in front of their home crowd and were always fighting from behind after a rough start and a beatdown led by Nebraska’s Pryce Sandfort. However, despite playing a sub-par game, the Illini had an opportunity to take the game to Overtime.

The majority of Illini fans have expressed significant disappointment. This team was tabbed as a talented, top of the Big Ten squad, yet they seem to leave a lot to be desired. They missed double-digit free throws en route to a loss vs Alabama. They got punked at Madison Square Garden by UCONN, and now they have lost to Nebraska at home.

However, in the final portions of the 2025 calendar year, Illinois basketball has shown many signs that it is actually doing just fine.

The Offense

The main issue for the Illini is the fact that they have had a majority of their key pieces in and out of the lineup. Andrej Stojakovic missed a majority of the summer with a knee injury and was quickly thrust into the lineup after missing the season opener and exhibitions. Tomislav Ivisic missed a lot of the summer due to Tonsil surgery and then missed a portion of the start of the season due to a knee injury that was thought to be rather severe at the time.

Despite this, the Illini have the second-best offense in the country, according to KenPom. Per BartTorvik.com, Illinois has the fourth-best offense in the country. Typically, top offenses tend to win in March regardless of how up-and-down the regular season is. Just look at Nate Oats and Alabama, who consistently have a top offense and will occasionally have losing streaks throughout their seasons.

Quadrant-one games

We all knew Illinois had a difficult non-conference schedule. Through 12 games, they have played 6 quadrant-one games. Thus far, they are 3-3 in those games. To be fair, a 3-3 record in quadrant one games at this point in the season and the circumstances that the Illini have gone through is reasonable.

Illinois basketball has some minor things to work on. Their role identification, consistent adherence to the scouting report all need to improve. If Illinois can work on these things, they will be the dark-horse that everyone expects them to be.
