What Former Illinois Basketball Sharpshooter Alfonso Plummer is Up To

The theme for Illinois basketball these past few years has been additions through the transfer portal. Ever since Ayo Dosunmu went to the NBA, Brad Underwood has primarily relied on the transfer portal to keep his team at the top of the conference. Players like Terrence Shannon Jr, Marcus Domask, and Matthew Mayer were key cogs in the Illini’s recent success. However, one player that came through in the transfer portal that is sometimes forgotten is Alfonso Plummer.

Right now, Plummer is playing on Capitanes de Arecibo in the Puerto Rican basketball league. He averages 19.9 points per game on the top team in the league while shooting a blazing 41.3 percent from three. Plummer is teammates with Chicago native, Jahlil Okafor. In fact, Alfonso Plummer made the all-star team for the league this past year. Other players in the league include former NBA pros such as Ed Davis, Alize Johnson, Norris Cole, and Jared Sullinger.

Illinois Basketball’s Gunman

Plummer only played one year in Champaign, however, he quickly became famous for his incredible shot-making ability. Kofi Cockburn most famously coined the Puerto Rican native the nickname “gunman” as Plummer would frequently go unconscious from three. This led the Illini to victory many times during a season where they won the Big Ten regular season championship. Plummer’s incredible three-point shooting combined with Kofi Cockburn’s dominant inside presence made Illinois basketball an extremely tough out during that season.

Alfonso Plummer may go down as one of the most impressive shooters to ever step foot on the Illinois campus. His name is certainly up there with names such as Corey Bradford and Luther Head.
