Why Ben Humrichous was a huge factor in Illini win over Tennessee
Humrichous has taken a completely evolved role and is thriving at it
Ben Humrichous, the MVP of the Illini’s biggest win of the season? Hearing that, one would think that the Tipton, Indiana native drained 5 or 6 threes and went off for a 20+ point performance. But that was not the case; in fact, Ben Humrichous did not even attempt a single field goal in the Illini’s 75-62 win over Tennessee. Humrichous provided timely rebounds and defensive effort. In 26 minutes, Ben contributed 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. In the postgame press conference, Illini coach Brad Underwood said that there was “no doubt” that Ben was the MVP of the game.
Fans have had mixed perspectives on Humrichous as he is only shooting 5 of 15 from the three against high-major opponents this year. However, as the Illini have become healthy, this role fits perfectly.
An evolving role
Ben Humrichous committed to Illinois in April 2024 and immediately walked onto campus with very high expectations. The graduate transfer from Evansville was tabbed as a lightsout 40% plus three point shooter, will skill and versatility at 6 foot 9. In fact, certain basketball analysts were comparing him to former Tennessee Volunteer Dalton Knecht. However, Humrichous struggled to adjust to the Big Ten physicality and speed to say the least. Though he shot a respectable 34 percent, Humrichous struggled with inconsistent offensive outputs and frustrating defensive miscues.
Many were disappointed in the performance Ben Humrichous put out on the floor. However, he chose to return to Illinois for a second year and is in a completely different role. This role suits him more. He can be the guy who comes off the bench and provides 20 to 25 minutes of energy, hustle, and winning plays.
We all know he can knock down the occasional three, but if he can continue these types of intangibles, watch out for the Illini.
