3 Illinois Football Players Who Drove Victory Over Duke

Illinois Football made a statement on Saturday (9/4) as Luke Altmyer and the Illini ventured into unfamiliar territory in Durham, NC, and came away with a massive early-season road win in ACC country.

After a shaky first half that saw Bret Bielema’s crew only up 14-13 at the break, the Illini came out swinging in the second half. They ended the game with a dominant 31-6 stretch to seal a 45-19 blowout over the Duke Blue Devils.

Luke Altmyer was on fire, finishing the day 22/31 for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns with zero turnovers, with the help of Rochester, IL, native Hank Beatty, who led the Illini’s receivers for the second consecutive week. On the defensive side, coach Aaron Henry set out to create chaos for talented sophomore QB Dariah Mensah and Duke’s offense—and he succeeded. Alongside All-American Gabe Jacas, the Illini defense dominated. They left Durham with 5 crucial takeaways, including 4 fumble recoveries and an interception.

While Altmyer and familiar standouts like Jacas continue to shine, this 2025 roster has a number of rising stars beginning to emerge as key contributors.

As No. 9 Illinois inches closer to Big Ten play, these three players are emerging as key contributors.

(1) S Tanner Heckel – Sophomore

The surprise of the day during the Illini’s beatdown of the Blue Devils was sophomore safety Tanner Heckel, who came up with a pair of crucial second-half plays for Aaron Henry’s defense to help seal the victory with a breakout performance in Durham.

Heckel, a former 8-man football standout from Lyndon, Kansas, snagged an athletic interception from Mensah deep in Illini territory at a pivotal moment of the fourth quarter, with Illinois clinging to a 31-19 lead and looking to keep Duke at bay—a turnover that set up another Altmyer touchdown drive. Later in the quarter, Heckel blitzed off the edge for a sack and a strip fumble, putting the exclamation point on a massive road win.

The Illini’s starting secondary is already stout, but seeing young depth pieces like Heckel step up in key moments shows just how bright the future is in this room—and why Illinois fans should feel confident about the defense as Big Ten play draws near.

(2) WR Hank Beatty – Senior

Another big week for senior wideout Hank Beatty.

We knew the former Rochester (IL) standout had the athleticism and potential to be a breakout candidate in 2025. However, he’s already delivering in a big way. Beatty leads all Illini receivers through two games, as well as leading the nation in all-purpose yardage.

After an eye-opening performance in Week 1 against Western Illinois in a 52-3 blowout, Beatty kept it rolling in Week 2. The speedy senior hauled in 8 catches for 128 yards receiving, while also rushing for a 25-yard touchdown out of the wildcat formation on a fake reverse sweep. Like in week one, Beatty again flashed his versatility, finding multiple ways to impact the game.

It’s clear that following the departures of Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin to the pros, Luke Altmyer has developed a strong trust in Beatty, who has grown and developed under Bret Bielema and Barry Lunney Jr.’s system. With a lot of new faces stepping up in Justin Stepp’s wide receiver unit, it’s no surprise Hank is standing out as a consistent playmaker for Altmyer. He’s the kind of athletic playmaker that Altmyer and this Illinois Football program will lean on all season long.

If he continues at this pace, Beatty will force his way into serious NFL conversations.

(3) WR Justin Bowick

Another rising name in the Illini offense is Justin Bowick. The Ball State transfer is proving to be a difference-maker in his first season in Champaign. In Week 1, Bowick caught two touchdowns on just three receptions. Justin kept the momentum rolling against Duke on the road.

The big 6’4 wideout found the end zone once again against the Blue Devils for his third score in just two weeks. So far, Bowick is Illinois’s early-season leader in touchdowns and one of Luke Altmyer’s most trusted red-zone targets. Early in the third quarter, Bowick used his impressive combination of size and athleticism to beat his defender on a quick slant from Altmyer for a 4-yard touchdown, extending Illinois’s lead over the Blue Devils to 21-13.

Bowicks’ performance was a continuation of what he showed in the opener… He’s reliable and difficult to defend in tight spaces. Bowick is exactly the type of big-bodied playmaker Bielema envisioned when bringing him to Champaign. Along with Hank Beatty and other emerging playmakers, Justin has stepped into a leading role. If his early production is any indication, he’s on his way to becoming a crucial piece of this Illini offense.
