Brad Underwood and his evolution as a head coach with the Illini
When Brad Underwood arrived in Champaign, he brought the reputation forged through the Bob Huggins and Frank Martin coaching tree: intense, demanding, and unapologetically in your face.
His teams reflected it.
Nine seasons later, he’s still every bit as competitive as the coach Illinois hired in 2017.
But he’s also something way different.
Before we all rush to predict what next season will look like, it’s worth looking at what he’s already built. For Illinois fans who remember the highs of Bill Self/Bruce Weber and the grind of the John Groce years, the résumé speaks loudly: NCAA Tournaments every year this decade, a Final Four, an Elite Eight, and multiple NBA Draft picks.
Early Brad Underwood basketball was exactly what you’d expect—hard-nosed and rigid. The “on the line, up the line” defense forced turnovers but gave up open looks. Offensively, his spread system didn’t always fit the roster.
Then came the first pivot.
With Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn, Illinois became a pick-and-roll, post-heavy machine that bullied opponents and pushed the program back into the national spotlight.
He adapted again, leaning into physical guards and a huge front court to build one of the nation’s most dangerous offenses.
And now comes his boldest shift yet.
This past roster signaled a philosophical change. Brad Underwood went all-in on skill, spacing, and versatility, building a team capable of scoring from anywhere.
But the biggest change isn’t his scheme.
Underwood has embraced the portal, NIL, and international recruiting. More importantly, he’s evolved as a leader. The coach who once described himself as “way more rigid” has become more flexible, more trusting, and more collaborative.
The fire is still there. It’s just sharper now.
And the Illini are better for it.
