Illinois basketball has now won four straight games ever since their blowout loss vs the Duke Blue Devils. Though getting healthy has been a main reason for their resurgence, the Illini have made some minor schematic changes on both sides of the ball. On top of that, their veteran players, especially the ones with high-major experience, have stepped up in a major way. Tre White and Kylan Boswell have been rocks for Illinois basketball in the past four games and their veteran leadership has emerged at the right time. Head Coach Brad Underwood even credited White and Boswell, stating that their leadership has changed the dynamic of the season.
Tre White
Since the Duke Game: 18.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg on 65.7% from the field and 62.5% from the three. 15/18 from the line in the four game stretch.
At one point this season, Tre White looked like the best player on the team. He had a nice blend of an inside-outside game and was providing rim pressure for the Illini offense. However, White struggled with illness and didn’t even scored 0 points in 15 minutes across two games in early February. Since the game vs Duke, White has rounded back into form and provided a consistent, efficient scoring punch on the wing.
White is in his third year of high-major college basketball. If he can provide this production for the rest of March, Illinois basketball will be tough to beat.
Kylan Boswell
Since the Duke Game: 17.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 5.8 apg on 58.7% from the field and 31.6% from 3pt land.
Kylan Boswell also dealt with a midseason lull. In fact, he was benched at one point in time in favor of Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn. However, the junior point guard has stepped up as the team’s emotional leader on and off the court. It really seems that some subtle defensive adjustments by Brad Underwood has allowed Boswell to regain some of the edge that makes him such a vital piece. Boswell sets the tone for Illinois basketball with his defense and physicality.
As March comes around, winning teams need that one gritty, fearless player. Kylan Boswell is that for the Illini.
