Breaking: Illini Freshman RB Out for the Season
Illinois Football Freshman running back OUT for the season

News: During his open media availability on Tuesday (8/12), Illinois Football head coach Bret Bielema addressed the Illini’s ever-changing injury report as his No. 12-ranked squad continues deep into the grind of fall training camp, in preparation for an eagerly anticipated 2025 season in Champaign.
According to Bielema, despite some minor bumps and bruises, his roster has seen very few injuries of concern thus far — especially among starters and key rotational players. However, Bielema shared some unfortunate news with the media this afternoon regarding freshman running back John Forster, who is expected to be sidelined for an extended period with a knee injury.
With the bad news out of the way, there is some positive in this situation. Luckily, coach Bielema claims Forster’s injury isn’t catastrophic and will not require surgery. Still, he’s expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025–26 season.
What are Bielema’s thoughts on the loss of the “impressive” freshman?
Bielema on the loss of Forster
“John Forster, unfortunately, had a play on a scrimmage, where he was just kind of running towards the boundary. Unfortunately, took a knee injury that is non-surgical, but it will keep him out a pretty extended amount of time,” stated the Fighting Illini head coach.
Bielema continued, “It’s a non-surgery repair. But, unfortunately for us, that takes him out of any opportunities with us this fall to play. Could get back later in the fall, we’re still running some more tests.”
Bielema concluded, “Him and Cedric (Wyche II) both have been very impressive.”
How Forster’s Loss Affects Illinois Football
Forster’s absence likely won’t cause major ripple effects right away, but he had the potential to bring a spark to the Illini’s backfield, similar to Ca’lil Valentine’s impact in 2024 — adding valuable speed to a talented veteran unit led by Kaden Feagin, Aidan Laughery, and now Sophomore Ca’lil Valentine.
All three are proven leaders, but each has battled their share of injuries in the past.
If one or a pair of Feagin, Laughery, or Valentine were to go down, Illinois might be forced to lean on its younger talent like Forester — similar to how Valentine stepped up in 2024 for the unit after Feagin’s season-ending hip injury on the road at Penn State.
Fortunately, speedy South Florida native Cedric Wyche II is on standby if needed. If called upon, the true freshman could earn valuable Big Ten reps and get an early chance to prove himself. However, the hope for Illinois Football is to stay healthy and consistent enough in Thad Ward’s much-anticipated running back room to avoid having to lean heavily on their youth, allowing the younger players like Wyche and Forester more time to develop and get fully prepared for the physicality of a full season in the Big Ten.
If needed, Bielema could utilize big, versatile power back/tight end Jordan Anderson more heavily to boost Illinois rushing attack if needed, in the scenario of key injuries.
